How much does it cost to install an air conditioner in one room?

I have a room that generates a lot of heat from 3 monitors and my gaming consoles and PC and opening a window or having a fan doesn't cut it. It ain't even summer yet. A worker came in and told me that it would cost around £1800 to install an AC in my room. £1800???
I called a different one and they said they would do it for £1400?
The AC's are basically the same I asked about and they're fitting in one of the newer models Toshiba or Panasonic. The AC will be right next to a window. So pipes won't have to even be that long.
The AC is 12000 also. Anyone know if these prices are right or are they taking advantage of me having no idea how much it costs?

You can get air conditioners that don't have an outside unit and just need two vent holes drilled through the wallA kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Have a look at this website to see prices of all different types of a/c units.

Have you considered a portable unit which would cut out installation costs?0 -
A portable one (i.e. stand-alone, feed vent hose out of window) will do it at a third or less of what you've been quoted, and be more versatile. I've got two in my garage waiting for the heatwave to be wheeled out..
edit: just looked at the prices, they're even cheaper now than when I got mine 8-9 years ago, £300 and you're sorted......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Make sure the quote is for everything, electric supply, condense drain to outside etc. Plus if looking at different models look at the noise rating inside and out as some units can be very noisy.0

I spent £800 on a DeLonghi portable unit many years ago, and found it to be completely useless. The main problem was that it was waaaay too noisy to leave running in the bedroom overnight - it was completely impossible to get to sleep, and within a few minutes of turning it off, the room was unbearably hot again.
Portable units may be quieter and cheaper now, but after having a proper system professionally installed in the house, I've never looked back. It's whisper-quiet, and far more effective at cooling the room. The Daikin units I had installed have a special "night" mode, which makes them almost inaudible, but even in normal running they're so quiet it's not a problem to leave them running normally.
My installation cost £1200 per room, if my memory serves. This was about five years ago.0 -
You have already had some decent replies but just to back it all up I have, in the last week, received a quote for a split type aircon unit for a small room at work.
Total cost £1200 including a 5 year warranty - although it should be noted that suitable electrics are already in place.
We have portable units too in some areas which work an absolute treat as long as you have somewhere to pipe the heat outside using the washer/dryer-style flexible hose. i think we paid around £450 each and they work well but are extremely noisy as has already been mentioned.
So, no 'new' information really to add to the thread but I hope this helps you make a decision.0 -
Where I live, I need a/c so have in all rooms. Two units were provided by the builder, but were a cheap Chinese make. When we went to buy more, we were advised to buy inverter units, which although more expensive to buy, were cheaper to run. It does sound as though you have been quoted for inverter units, which in my opinion are well worth the extra. The electric bill shoots up dramatically when the cheaper ones are in use.0

We had wall-mounted aircon in our office, individual per-office boxes rather than a central system. Only thing I would add is to perhaps look at those that heat as well as just cool - we were told (though I don't think we had any proper evidence) that the heating side would be more cost-effective than our standard central heating.
Some people in work also had apartments in Spain, and mentioned that the cost of the equipment there was a fraction of what it was here, ~£300 for a wall-mounted unit that we were quoted £1500 for. Presumably a bigger market out there, at the time at least.0 -

Can't say whether using a/c in heating mode is cheaper to run in the UK or not, but it certainly is here in Cyprus, compared to our gas central heating, which is astronomical to run, and rarely gets used.0
