I've had Avast for years, but recently, all of a sudden I keep getting notices that it is about to expire and need to renew (for a price). I uninstal it and install the Free Edition, and then a month later I get the same notices that it is about to expire. This very day I got rid of Avast and went back to AVG which I used to run on my old XP lappy.

You're the only user I've noticed on this board that had that problem, as mentioned in your own thread on the subject, it shouldn't happen if you take notice of the prompts, ie click the less prominent "stay with basic protection", not "try internet security for free" when installing

Yep, that's the one. Not too bothered anymore now, but thanks for your posts.

Hi everyone - my motter has a Windows 7 PC and it was packaged with Norton anti-virus when she bought it 3 years ago and which she has been renewing each year. It's up for renewal again and she showed me the email notification and they say it will cost £64.99 for another year. This seemed quite high to me but there again I have been an Apple user for years and not had to bother with anti-virus products as it's built in and I'm not really up on anti-virus products or costs.

Is Norton good and it is worth the £64.99 - what is the alternative? The complacement side of me says just renew as it's easier but the cost is niggling me a bit.

    thanks for any advice

The cost should be niggling you a lot
As others have mentioned there are free alternatives, AVG and Avast, personally I have used both and not mad on them in the end, this machine came with Mcafee and like you they hound you to renew, however I just buy a license from a well known auction site, I don't mind paying a fiver or so a year, as I prefer the way Mcafee works to AVG and Avast, the other alternative which is free and as good as any other is windows defender (or whatever they call it nowadays) . If you really want to stick with Nortons, then check on the web for low cost renewals.

defender is the baseline (92%), just about everything else is better.

Thanks everyone & sorry for delayed response! If I purchase a cheaper version of Norton presumably I need to uninstall my existing version first? Sorry not the most technical . . .

No, you just enter the new licence key.

I have used both AVG and Avast for a long time now (free versions) and I have had no problems at all. The one PC I had with Norton installed gave me so much trouble that now I wouldn't have Norton on a computer if you paid me to.
