Your not looking for anyone to blame - that is good - you recognise you have a problem
You can question the system if you like - nothing to stop you dong that,
But questioning the system won't actually do anything to change the situation you are in. My friends marriage has recently broken up due to her husband's compulsive gambling over many years. Please seek help so you can get your life backEarly retired - 18th December 2014

I can kind of see where he is coming from though. Presumably, as he did not have the money in his bank account, if the system on the gaming website had been working, this £5000 would not have cleared. The bank would not have authorised it and so he could not have wasted it.
I have a really good credit history and a £500 overdraft. In January I made a mistake and ended up £750 overdrawn. I received a letter telling me that I could not withdraw any more and that they were charging me £25. So with a good credit history my bank was not going to let me go more than £750 overdrawn. I presume with the OP their bank would not have let him go £5000 overdrawn given his history.
I think the gambling website need to take some responsibility too in this case. They should not have allocated the money as though they had received it from the bank when they hadn't.0 -
Do you really recognise you have a problem, at this precise moment?bankingworries wrote: »In short I have past problems with gambling addiction but
No - you have a gambling addiction, in the present tense.
I am not saying this to be judgemental, but in the hope that you can say it to yourself, face up to it and get some help.
I won't say good luck, as luck is for the horse races, but I wish you well.0 -

So due to an internal betfair problem they processed several deposits even though you didn't have the funds in your bank. And now they say they are going to try and process these payments properly however you don't have the money in your bank therefore this cannot happen. Is this correct?
The issue is now between you and betfair. Did you lose the money via their casino section or was it sports exchange betting? If it was the latter then BF will try and pursue you for the funds because the 5 grand (minus their commission) is no longer with BF but with other punters. Ie. They are out of pocket. If you lost it using their casino service then you may find them being a bit more lenient because they havent actually incurred a loss (okay a loss of profit perhaps).
Just be honest with them and tell them you don't have the funds in your bank and that you are a problem gambler and see what the response is.
Hope you get it sorted.if i had known then what i know now0 -

Yes there is. People are cured of myriad mental illnesses every day, including addictions.0 -

Well you do keep saying this, yes, but then to go off and try to blame someone else..
So yes, go to gw care, try to get help with your addiction, and stop suggesting that it is "the system" that is at fault.
"The system" is no more at fault for what you have done than Robert Dyas would be at fault if you used their staple gun to perform amateur surgery.0 -
I hope you get the problem sorted. No matter who was at fault with this system and that system, it is sad that you have been tempted by all of this especially as you had got yourself a full facility bank account. I really hope that this doesn't ruin all of that for you.
Let's hope you can manage this addiction in the future and not cause yourself so many problems, regardless of whether a website will allow you to deposit funds.
Good luck.0 -
The OPs problem isn't that he has a gambling addiction; It's that he's really really rubbish at gambling.
I put £10.00 in Betfair last Saturday, about 20 bets later and my balance was up to £60. I then withdrew £20.00 and used the remainder on some higher risk gambles which unfortunately did not pay off.
If I had had the OPs £5K, I'd imagine I'd currently be on a fortnight in the Bahamas.
What a tragic character.Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0 -
