*For those who have no sympathy, it is OK I do not seek it, I do go to the relevant GA meetings, I do try block myself from Gambling and I do always tell myself that I won't do this again but I am human and have a set DNA which means I screw up, also the blocks that can be put in place are just as easy to get around if someone is determined enough

Have you thought of cutting up your debit and credit card(s)? Seeing that you cannot trust yourself, you should put yourself onto cash only. Get a savings account with an ATM card so you can draw cash.

Interesting situation, I wonder if someone could gamble away their pension post under the budget proposals?

Yes of course they can, if they aren't too busy driving their Lamborghini up and down the High Street.

I wish people would stop insulting people who have saved all their lives for retirement. Even the Labour party have now admitted the new rules are actually quite good and it's ok to treat people as responsible adults.

Hi sorry for the typo, yes the answer was I have now lost all the money and so the funds/payments cleared and have also left my bank.

I am not looking to find a way to blame someone else, in fact quite the opposite I know this is my own fault and is a constant drain on my life however I am a little bit shocked, surprised and dissapointed that the banks let me go £5k overdrawn when it was only 9 mths ago that they refused mean upgrade from a basic to a normal bank account (I now have upgraded)

I presume I am going to have to phone the bank direct and seek solice/find an agreement, will they stop any charges if I make an agreement as I can pay the money back over the next 12-16 weeks?

Any more advice please post I am really worried right now and don't want to get in the same position as before.

Thanks for the replies so far!

If you really want to get rid of this addiction, that thinking needs to change to, I am human, I have a set DNA, but I am no fool to waste away my life like this.
    All the best.

If only it was that simple your cure would make you millions.

Sadly there is no cure for mental illness, gambling addicition etc etc and so those who don't have the problem can never really understand it until it affects them or someone they love.

A better solution would be to not allow people to gamble using bank/credit cards but instead you should only be allowed to gamble with a card which you have loaded with credit using money/cash as this is a lot more complex to arrange and would stop impulse gambling in 99% of cases, also setting a realistic limit on the gambling card would help 99% of people as most of the time lets say £200-£300 would be more than enough for the majority of gamblers, those who wish to exceed this amount would need to apply direct for an increase in limit to the card providers, this ofc would change the face of gambling and cost the government millions in lost revenue and is why it won't happen, they don't see the bigger picture of the billions it would save in debt, ill health and suicide, sorry I am delving to deep maybe, would speak on this all day in private and dedicate my life to making it happen

It's a fair suggestion from that side of the fence, but what about the person who wants to use his Debit/Creidt card to lay a bet on a football game, Horse, Dog or whatever during the weekend or occasionally when feeling lucky.
pre-paid and loading cash would be a nightmare.
Mind you, you also have a growing number of poker players making it professional online.

You actually verified my point, by making it harder to go to the pre payment outlet (shops) people have to do a little bit more effort than to gamble and thus you stop alot of impulse/problem gambling like in my case.

We need to change what we can change and that is the system of gambling as we clearly can not change the mind of the human being into stopping

You won't like to hear this but I say it anyway

For somebody who is unable to control themselves you have a large number of ideas on how other people could be controlled so you don't have to take responsibility for yourself. Stop hiding behind your gambling addiction and being a human etc, use your head to create the necessary controls for yourself.

No that's cool I understand this is never going to be a situation where we all agree, I am inspired though to do something about this even more than ever :)

As for my bank I haven't spoke to them yet, will do so now I have spoke to the betfair company though and will post an interesting chat log to see if they are at fault maybe for allowing the funds to be used as they told me something interesting.
  • In short Betfair have actually suspended my account before I have even spoke to them which is very suspicious.

I spoke to them and the reason is:

l: ok i can see we had an issue where your account is credited but we didnt recieve the money (it was a betfair problem not you), therefore your account was automatically suspended by the system for security reasons .. but do not worry i have been informe about this and has happened to other customers
: so all i need to do is take down your details and send them to our manager
: they will get back to your within the coming hours
: so sorry baout this but its a system malfunction
    : not your fault

Upon arguing (20 min chat log) it seems to me that betfair had an internal issue and so credited me the money without actually it clearing and so in theory I used their money, then 24 hours later when they got their issues sorted they then took the money from my bank either even though it wasn't there, surely this is not common practice or fair?

Any experts out there can help me on this? oh also they didnt suspend my account until 24 hours after the deposit so it wasn't automated IMO

*PS they are doing an internal investigation now at my request.
