Cat Neutering, Is all this really necessary??

Metacam is a powerful drug, and like all drugs can have side effects. My vets are always cautious about it's use and I have never been asked to give it at home after a neutering operation. The procedure is really minor for a male cat, they don't even stitch the incision it is so tiny. I think the vets give a painkilling injection while at the surgery and I have never felt the need to use anything other than that.0

Let him mature first before neutering him. Neutering early isn't always the best.

Hi, its a few years ago now since I got my female cat neutered
I can't remember how much it was exactly..somewhere in the region of £60. There were no blood tests, laser treatment ,special food or even pain relief afterwards, I just took her back around a week later for the stitches out. The vet did tell me he had looked in her ears and she had ear mites, so I bought some advocate solution from the vets.
If you don't already, get your flea treatment etc online...its cheaper. I use the pet medicine company , there are other companies online as well.0 -
Well I have always had my dogs spayed / neutered, the last one was about 4 years ago. Whilst I know a cat is not a dog!!! I have never been offered a blood test ,lazer treatment or special food. I already had a collar. My dogs were given a pain killer injection before leaving the surgery as a normal part of the proceedure. I think your vet has £ signs in the eyes!! So as others have said worth shopping around.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

We never had any pain killers to bring home with any of our cats they never seemed to bother them nor did the vet over. There price of of lab test is about twice what my vet charged even when the insurance was picking up bill.0

I would not bother with the metacam or the other extras and I am a vet nurse. He should be given an injection of metacam at the time of surgery which will last 24 hours and by then he should be fine.0

I had our boy kitten neutered just before Christmas and it cost £53. No take home pain relief, he got a jab after the op and that seemed to be plenty. He went in at about 9am, I picked him up mid afternoon once he was awake and had a pee and was given an info sheet in case there were any problems. That's the fifth cat I've had neutered at that vet and never had any issues at all.Val.0

Yep , i didn't realize until you suffer cats in heat how important it is. I would have never considered it , i love cats but my god that drive you mad when they get to that point in their lives. It was then it dawned on me how important it is.
Neutering is actually quite cheap when you think of the costs especially with a female if they end up pregnant. Plus it is worth it to calm them down.Any vets we have contacted have never charger the prices some of you are mentioning  but i guess if any of you live in London that is no surprise. Females shouldnt cost more than £60 , males probably around £50. Our vets is brilliant. They are literally on our doorstep which is great when you have cats who do not like the box of doom plus it is a main road and the traffic is scary for them. It is a 3 minute walk at most. Also they have a great reputation.
We had a cat called Jessie , last year we got her spayed. Being unemployed we get the £20 off i can't totally recall the price but i think it was £26 so normally it would have been £46. Being the first cat i have ever had to take to be spayed i found it tough , i blubbed a bit but it was worth it. We had no choice , i couldn't watch her in heat , it looked horrible for her. She was doing that funny walk & making the 'in heat' noises. Anyway it took her 30 minutes to get her in the box of doom and after we got her back brave little thing it took a lot to stop her licking her stitches. But it went well , she healed nicely and her fur came back. However a few months afterwards just after we spent £39 or so on flea treatments as well she went missing. I don't regret the spaying , if she is alive and out there i feel happy & proud of the fact there is no risk of extra strays on the street.
Funny i came across this thread. We now have a male cat called Salem who we thought no he won't make those horrible noises & he can't get pregnant but the first bit boy we were wrong. We realized when he got to the nearly 1 mark getting him neutered was important. Having a female cat nearby he often sees outside isn't helping. I stroked her once and he sniffed my hand & it was hell. We was trapped in the kitchen because he made the most awful meowing sound , his tail went bushy and whenever he saw me he went crazy. Thankfully next morning he was fine again. I have learned the hard way never put a female cat's scent near a male in heat , it was around that time this started. Past 2/3 weeks he just will not stop meowing so we decided we wanted him to calm down. We are getting him neutered 8am this Monday. With the £20 off it is £19 so would be £39 usually. Even the full price isn't bad for a peaceful life.
Until i had cats in heat i never realized the importance of neutering but in general it is better for both cats & owners. If i ever get other cats i will try to get them spayed or neutered before they are old enough to be in heat.INACTIVE ACCOUNT0 -
I realized after paying more attention (it is 6.30am so that's my excuse
) you have had previous cats sorted so already know the basics. And was asking a completely different question. But my super long post is useful for anyone who might be new to having cats. I think i need sleep :rotfl:
Our vets never talked about all that extra stuff , just the food. I think they do overcharge vets. The flea stuff we bought for £39 , the same products were a good £10 cheaper online. We had little money at the time , i felt like going back and getting a refund. I couldn't afford all that extra stuff , to me it doesn't sound important just anything they can think of to add to the bill. Cats are pretty resilient things anyway i am sure he will be fine. And surely pain relief should be included , i wish i knew what was included when i had Jessie spayed. But it was about a year ago so i have forgot.INACTIVE ACCOUNT0 -
My 7 month Bella got neutered yesterday. Because of my low income as a student the cat federation I think it's called, sent me a voucher for £26 off. My bill came to £50.05.
This was for neutering, a collar, food and a worming tablet.
I also paid £60 for the kitten package and asked them to micro chip her whilst asleep.
But her injections, flea treatment and check up etc I won't have to pay any extra for.
Her pain relief injection that they gave her runs out around lunchtime today. There was no need to send any extra home.
No blood tests or extra treatment was suggested.
I would definitely gets quotes from other vets and maybe ask pet owners in your area where they recommend as word of mouth is usually the best reviews to get.0
