Hi
Hope someone can help with this. Its nearly time for Tango at 5 months old to be neutered and I've been to the vets and got a quote. I'm just wondering how much of this is really necessary though as I don't remember paying anywhere near as much for my previous cats to be neutered and spayed although it was a few years ago now.
The cost of the neuter itself is £42.50 then the vet is wanting to do a laboratory blood test to assess my pets health status before anaesthesia at a cost of £52, they are also suggesting I pay £8 for some kind of post op laser treatment which is supposed to reduce swelling, £21.73 for Metacam pain relief and £4.16 for special kitten food for after the op. Do I really need all this, I'm being a bit cautious not because I don't want the best for my cat I do but because I've just paid £72 for 1 vet exam, 4 vials of advocate and 4 droncit tablets for my other cats today and am beginning to wonder if I am being taken for a bit of a ride with the prices the vet has quoted me.
Any help advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

TBH....I don't think most of that is necessary.
I went with one of my friends to pick her cat up after the spay and nearly died when I heard the total bill of £130. Once we looked at it, we returned the Metacam , the buster collar, the 'special food' and took a fair bit off the total.
Will the vet allow you just to have the operation? if not, go elsewhere.0 -
Thank you Paddypaws101. They will, its the bloodwork, laser treatment and special food I'm a bit worried about. Don't mind paying extra for the pain relief but he's only 5 months old an absolute terror and seems pretty healthy to my untrained eyes with the way he behaves so I'm not sure that he needs a full blood screen doing!!!!loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0

A blood test to assess the cat's health status is not necessary, although may pick up any problems that wouldn't otherwise be obvious until it is put under anaesthetic.
Laser treatment I've never heard of, probably not necessary either. Neither is the "special" food, I'm sure he'd rather have a yummy dinner at home of your choosing.
The Metacam might not be "essential", but... would you go home after an operation without pain relief?0 -

Absolutely not and I have no qualms whatsoever about paying for pain relief for him I just think that the rest of it seemed to be a tad excessive and wondered if it was all really necessary for the procedure he's having done.loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0 -

my boy kit was neutered on Wednesday - standard cost of £32 was quoted to me, and I asked for him to be microchipped at the same time, and was quoted an extra £15 for this.
No other products/services were suggested by the vet practice, and none were required post-op. I was quoted £47 total, and thats what I paid.
Take-home pain relief was not suggested by my vet, they were happy that the incision was very small and clean, no sutures required, and Ed had eaten and was alert before he left the vet. On his after-care sheet was listed the practice group phone numbers, including the 24-hour service.
Ed is my 2nd male kitten to be neutered while in my care, first one didn't have anything extra or pain relief medication recommended by my vet either.0 -
looby, is that one of the 'chain' vets like vets4pets or the like?Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500

It is Vets 4 Pets, I've used them with all 4 of my cats before and they were really good when Susie my oldest cat cut her paw open which is why I've stuck with them really but now I am beginning to wonder. I do have insurance in case anything major were to ever happen but obviously it won't cover me for this.loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0

I recently had a male cat neutered and it came to forty something pounds - can't remember exactly, but it included a long lasting pain relieving and anti-inflammatory injection. I'd say the food, pre-op blood tests and laser treatment are unnecessary. I think I'd be shopping round for different quotes too!0

It was a while ago since I took my cat but all I paid for was the operation and a collar. No pain relief was offered (I am now wondering if it came in with the price or he didn't get any
), I was offered the blood test but refused this and the vet was ok with that.
When I picked him up, they gave him a small tin of food (which was free) and asked if I wanted a collar which I brought as I didn't want him to lick his stitches.0 -
get prices from other local vets - i am suspect of these chain vets making you feel that you need procedures which are unnecessary and hiking up ins costs.Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500
