Mobile Phone insurance

My husband just got his first mobile phone on contract with 3 on Saturday. In the past he's always used cheap pay as you go phones so we've never had the need to take out insurance.

He was told if he didn't take the policy that they were offering we couldn't go back and add it on later but we could cancel it if he changed his mind.

Had a look around the MSE site and couldn't see anything about insurance for mobile phones.

The phone my husband got with his contract is roughly about £100 to buy if something happened to it(and we can't afford it) and we quite like the idea of being protected if the phone was stolen.

Can we get independent insurance to cover the phone (this policy covers Theft, loss, accidental damage, water damage, breakdown and unauthorised used) ? If so what's the best way of finding out who's the cheapest?

Most Banks these days offer cover as part of a package. I am with First Direct and get Mobile Phone Insurance, Travel Insurance and free cash machines abroad amongst other benefits so worth checking there.

Have found though that most Banks subcontract their Mobile Phone insurance to Phonesafe as do T-Mobile so you can deal with Phonesafe direct and pick the package that suites yourself.

You may be covered (or able to get cover) on your household contents insurance.

If the phone is £100 now, what will it be worth in a year? £50 maybe? If your insurance is £7/month, that's £84 spent to cover something that may be of less value than the premiums!

If I were you, I'd put the £7 a month into a piggy bank and use that to buy a new phone if mine was stolen. Assuming you only lose a phone every few years you'll be quids in in no time!
