When dealing with people who are depressed, forget about what you think will help them and just help them. If the OP's friend has asked for suggestions as to places in Belfast of where to go to meet people then fine, but if she has not, making suggestions could do more harm than good in my view.

Have had a nosey through the Meet up place and there's some great things there! Still trying to figure the whole thing out but when she comes to visit tonight I'll bring it up and see what she has to say. Thanks again :)

Could you suggest that YOU might want to go running or whatever and ask her to come along as motivation and support. That's an automatic ego boost for her :) And Cotta is right, ill health is more of a reason to exercise rather than less, if she isn't physically active then the illness will be much harder to manage.

No offence but I'm not interested in running at all. I do enough of that looking after my children as well working in a school all day lol.

As I said, due to medical reasons she cannot do this anyway. She' not able to do it. It really isn't because she won't run etc, it's the fact that she can't. She does a few things at the gym - what and when she can, and also swims. She's not lazy in that way, it really is just that due to medical reasons she can't and is not allowed to do certain activities.

Never thought of the evening classes. SO thanks for that suggestion. WIll have a look to see if there are any that we or she could afford to do :) DOn't know about her but I like the sound of Wine tasting lol. Maybe I could ask her to come along to that class with me lol.

Or QUB and Stranmillis - they do a big variety of 'lifelong learning' classes.
