It definitely does not always fail, as I have over two dozen DDs which do not have my name. For example, if my name is John Smith and my account 1234567 is with Lloyds, I would give Tesco an 'Account name' and an 'Account Nickname' of "JS Lloyds 1234567".

As I said earlier, perhaps they receive the actual account holder name under the covers. Although I have many different actual account names - e.g. Mr J Smith, Mr John Smith, John Smith, JS Smith, Mr JS Smith etc etc - it would be utter coincidence if any of the account names on my current accounts would actually match my Tesco account name. So not sure what they would be comparing, and how they'd decide the account is mine or not mine.
Maybe I'm missing the point, but won't the direct debit instruction sent to your bank specify your name (as held by Tesco Bank) as the 'name of the account holder' of the account at the bank from which the DD will pull?

See AUDDIS report reason code P. That looks the likely culprit?

Could be. I have no idea what they are sending / exchanging.

That can't be a problem in my case since I never had any problem with my Tesco DDs, many of which have been running literally for years now.

Thinking about it, I managed to set up 3rd party direct debits no problem up until this year before I got the letter saying they were closing the accounts. When I tried to set up a 3rd party direct debit earlier this year, it referred for further checks and they sent me a letter asking for a bank statement to show the account is in my name. When I didn't send them one, they blocked my accounts initially - when I rang up they said they 'were looking into my direct debits'. The next time I checked, the accounts weren't blocked and a few days later I got a 30 day closure letter. They said 3rd party direct debits are forbidden in their T&Cs. Do you think they don't like 3rd party direct debits for risk of fraud?

Yes but nothing fraud related (at least I don't think so). There's nothing CIFAS-related if that's where you're heading.

I am not heading anywhere nor implying anything, just seems strange that you have had accounts closed by Tesco and LBG.

I know. Probably because I draw too much attention to ripping off the banks. At the start of this year I was opening a hell of a lot of accounts to take advantage of the Yorkshire/Clydesdale switching offer while at the same time applying for donor accounts to switch with the likes of LBG. Lloyds declined the account on the basis of failing stage 2 credit checking (the account was opened and passed stage 1 auto-credit checking but was closed after a review) and soon after issued a 60 day closure notice of my existing accounts with them as well; they said they'd carried out a risk assessment so I put it down to either not being good business to them (creaming Reward/interest-paying accounts etc.) or them perhaps fearing potential money laundering from all the accounts they saw me opening.

With the Tesco issue again I drew attention to how I was utlising their direct debit facilities by having one referred.

    I'm just unlucky I guess.

I have three direct debits set up on my club lloyds account.

Unfortunately, this month there will be no payment collected from the two out of the three direct debits.

I am just wondering if I can use paypal to make two different payment to qualify for the tiered interest rate.

You only need 2 of your DDs to pay each month, and it seems one will do that, so you only need PayPal for the other one (not two as you suggest)?

Anyway, as far as I'm aware, 2 PayPal payments will not work, as they will both show as the same originator ref, unless you have 2 PayPal accounts.
