VIRUS On Laptop Help, please

Options
Hello Everyone,

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me. I have a poorly laptop that seems to have become infected with a virus that has ads springing up at pretty much every click of a button. It also frequently tells me I need Java installed or to update my google chrome, or my PC is running slowly and needs to be fixed etc

None of these are right, but I'm gradually losing the will to live, nor do I want to use the laptop as it is driving me up the wall! It's definitely getting worse.

Last night I ran the McAfee Stinger and it found and removed 1 trojan but that hasn't made any difference to my ad problem.

A friend has suggested I do a system restore and then run virus software, but I don't know how to do this, what the implications are (will I lose recent things/everything?), and which virus software.

My laptop is Windows7, google chrome, has Avast virus software (freebie).

I really hope one of you who is much more tuned into the techy side of things, will be able to help me.

many thanks in anticipation

    Hi,
Download and run Malwarbytes from here....https://www.malwarebytes.org/
System restore is not hard to do, but try the Malwarbytes first.
System restore can always be undone anyway if it doesn't have the desired effect.

download, install (DO NOT tick the box for trial of the Pro version) update and quick scan, allow it to delete all it finds (you have to go down the results window and make sure they're all ticked) as a starting point :)

    Hi, Again,

I've run the quick scan and the Malwarebytes has removed quite a number of files. But I still had the same problems, so I ran the longer scan, which found another file and removed it. BUT I still have the same problems.

I've looked at the system restore info, and while I understand more about it now (thank you!) I am not sure this will resolve anything. The dates I have as restore points are all in the last 7 to 10 days, and I've had this problem for longer than that. Also, I'm not sure that a system restore for Windows is a resolution to advertisements and invites to download software?

So, I'm afraid I'm stuck again. I have a cleaner laptop, that's for sure, but still have ads coming up practically every click (in fact my avast anti virus also kicks in often on MSE website telling me it's prevented a malware threat, and just typing this post has had 2 lots of ads coming up as well as my anti virus software).

Any ideas at all, really gratefully received.

    many thanks

    Morning, All

    It's fixed!! :j

    A bit of a fluke though... :p

I ran the Sophos software last night, and this morning, it told me that the laptop was clean, BUT I still had the problem. If anything it was worse!

I then tried to download the ccleaner from filehippo as suggested. My antivirus was screaming at me, and it downloaded a load of what I think of as junk stuff - you're possibly going to tell me these are useful, but I got a fright at all the "junk" so went in and uninstalled them - these were Speeditupfree, Outfox TV, PCOptimizer, MYPCBackup).

When I was in the program files, I noticed that I already had CCleaner, so ran it. BUT still had the same problem.

BUT then noticed I had a program in program files I didn't recognise - something like "Richer" (sorry, I've uninstalled it now...should have taken a note of the name). This had been installed mid Jan which was around when the problem started. So, I've uninstalled it, and eh voila! No more problem! :j

Oh the relief of no longer being offered World of Tanks, and a million other things I will never buy. :T

Many thanks for all the help offered. I feel much happier knowing I have a clean laptop, and will run the malware ones regularly to ensure I stay that way.

    Phew!

P.S. I didn't understand the instruction to post a Hijack...what does that mean?

just as a final check, open your browser and check which search engines are installed...delete/remove all except google and bing, and that should finish it off :)
