My energy bill has doubled in 2013
Options
Hi, I have been with npower for 5 years. I live in a 1 bed flat and only use electricity after 5pm when I am home from work. My bills have never exceeded £900 per year (£75 pm).
In Jan 2013 someone in my block of flats switched energy provider but my electricity supply was changed. I had not received a bill from npower, nor had I been able to log in to my account to view my bill usage and pay online as I use too. In March 2013 npower informed me that my electricity was switched by mistake and reinstated my account with them. I still couldn’t log in to my account and simply forgot about it and waited for them to resolve the problem themselves and send me a bill.
Finally today I was able to access my account and found a bill for £2184. This was for around 14 months of electricity (average 156pm)
I find it hard to believe the cost is over double what I was paying but I know energy prices have been going up so maybe its right. Can anyone tell me if this seem right or have npower made a mistake? An if so how can I prove it if they say it is correct?
Thanks for any advice,

have you provided them with an up to date meter reading?
do you pay by direct debit? thus payments will have been going towards your bill.0 -
Was anybody other than n'power billing you for Elec from Jan 2012 till March 2012 ?
If nobody was then this recent bill goes all way back to Jan 2012, ( 27 months). which would be £81 a month to make up the £2184, which with price rises over the period would seem to make sense.
That said, n'powers systems are a shambles at the present time and that includes billing
You need to look at the last bill you had before the Eroneous Transfer, what your meter reads now and see if the new bills consumption squares with your previous history0 -
Thanks for responding. I have not given them a meter reading but their reading is only 500kw more. I do not pay by direct debit. Usually if I am late with a payment they send me a red letter but I have heard nothing for 15 months now.
I found out they are changing computer systems so I suspect something has messed up as my letest bill says my meter reading is 357 (its actually around 95000.)0 -

My apologise, its was Jan 2013 not 2012. The reading before the transfer was 87040 (Jan 2013). My recent metre reading is 95700 (March 2014). So I have used 8660kwh of energy. I don't know how to work out how that comes to £2183.
On my latest bill it says I used 4,235 kWh and it cost me £737. So it does'nt add up at a glance but I just can't work it out.0 -
Hmmm - It seems that you only found this bill for £2184 when you eventually regained access to your online account - What was the issue date on this bill and it's End meter reading, and does it have an E beside the End reading to denote that it has been Estimated
You now have a recently dated bill for a further £737 - Was is the issue date of this bill and it's End meter reading, and was ths End reading estimated ?
Also in your all Elec flat, do you have an ECO7 meter with Day / Night rates ?
It's important you resolve this quickly as you now according to n'power, owe them £2,921, and n'power are not slow to go into *wolverine collection mode to collect debt - *Debt Collection Agencies/Court Orders/Enforced fitting of Paygo meters0 -

The issue date on that bill is 4th March. It does show its estimated at 96297. (Actual is 95700)You now have a recently dated bill for a further £737 - Was is the issue date of this bill and it's End meter reading, and was ths End reading estimated ?
This is my current bill dated 4th March which is £737, but on the bill they are requesting £2183 which covers from Dec 17th 2012 (my apparent leaving date) to 28 Feb 2014, thats about a 14 month period.
I did a transaction search with my online bank account to find out what I have been paying since 2009.
Per year:
2009 £573.9
2010 £633.77
2011 £713.83
2012 £788.76
So you can see why I am so suprised that in a 14 month period npower have charged me £2183 for electricity where as a usual 12 month period averaged around £700. I just don't understand how it can be so much more. Also in your all Elec flat, do you have an ECO7 meter with Day / Night rates ?
I have no idea. I don't use a lot of electricity so it's not something I have looked into. It's important you resolve this quickly as you now according to n'power, owe them £2,921, and n'power are not slow to go into *wolverine collection mode to collect debt - *Debt Collection Agencies/Court Orders/Enforced fitting of Paygo meters
I had tried contacting them but never got a reply from my emails and usually they will send a bill in the post if its overdue. As I said, I have'nt heard from them in 14 months.
There customers services is down till Monday and its hell getting through but I will have to sort this out now but want to get all the facts straight before I call them.
Thanks very much for your help. I hope npower have got it wrong and not me!0 -

Oddly yesterday I had a letter from npower (I'm with Scottish Power) when I opened it I was shocked to see a bill for just over £3k, however when I looked again, it had the correct house number but the street name was incorrectly spelt, the name on it was not mine and the postcode was not for my address either , the name on the bill was not that of any of my neighbours, upon ringing the number on the bill, the call did not go through to npower (the last 4 digits were 0300 instead of 3000, I have resealed it and sent it back to npower, but fear there is some kind of scam going on.0 -
Don't know if you are on E7 or not? You must know when giving meter readings if you are reading one register or two? It's clearly shown on your bill too. If E7 it will show day units (expensive) and night units (cheap).
You can't begin to control your usage and billing if you don't know what metering you have.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Sorry jaffy, but I'm rather losing the plot on this one
ECO7 meter? - Your bills will show a Day meter reading and a Night meter reading with different prices for both if you have an ECO7 meter - If there is just one line of Start reading, Ending reading and the charge you have a 'Standard' meter
Pity you did not give the End reading of the Mar 4th £737 bill - If the £2184 Bill runs up to 28 Feb 2014, then the £737 bill would seem to be for only 4 days supply ! ?
As previously posted, n'powers systems are in a complete shambles and the billing is not to be trusted, it is however almost impossible to pin point this problem without sight of all the bills - I strongly advise that you gather up all the bills you have and make an appointment with your local Citizens Advice Bureau, ( The CAB are now an official Govt. agency for Energy complaints)0 -
Can I just say, my Aldi shopping bills increased 4x last year.
I find it hard to believe the cost is over fourfold what I was paying but I know food prices have been going up so maybe its right. Can anyone tell me if this seem right or have Aldi made a mistake? An if so how can I prove it if they say it is correct?
