Send web texts to mobile phones

Sending SMS's from my basic mobile is a pain as well as not being particularly cost effective. Until recently O2 had an excellent but little known web texting service where even PAYG customers could send in practice very generous nos and sizes of SMS's from their PC to mobiles at almost zero cost. In their wisdom O2 decided to withdraw this and I have been vainly looking for a replacement ever since.
Google comes up with several alternatives but of those that work the sizes are quite restrictive. It appeared that Yahoo Messenger (I use Yahoo eMail) could fill the gap but this doesn't seem to work in practice, in the UK possibly for geographical reasons.
Can anyone point me in the direction of the least worst alternative preferably based on personal experience? Many thanks.
