Refund of the actually overpaid monies was never the question; the question was whether or not a refund of interest is due.

As I read it, after being threatened by the OP with court action, the company changed their position on the interest and agreed last night between 10:17 and 10:32 p.m. not only to pay the interest, but was able to issue a cheque for the amount in question within those few minutes.

How many call centres have that much authority, particular late at night?

I don't think that's what the OP said at all.
However, I have to say I do agree with your overall scepticism.:)
