The problem with Hong Kong is that it's actually a bit isolated, at least in terms of interesting things to do in nearby places.

I used to live there and no doubt communications have improved since I was there about 15 years ago. Macau is interesting for a day or two, and you can get up to canton/ Guangzhou fairly easily. When I left I came back overland and took a day on a boat to get up to Yangzhou/ Guilin for the karst topography. I then ended up with a flight to kunming, and most other things are a short flight away.

The Philippines is only a two hour flight from Hong Kong and has some fantastic areas, though you need to be a careful from a security perspective. Vietnam is a simailr distance to Hanoi or halong bay, some popel have raved about Taiwan but I've only ever charged planes there.
  • We're going to Hong Kong next month on the first stop of our honeymoon (then on to Thailand).
We deliberated for ages on hotels (we wanted to try not to spend too much over £600 for four nights).
Our end list consisted of Ovolo hotels, LBP, Harbour grand HK, Wesley OZO, Langham Place, Lanson and 99 Bonham.
Our top criteria was a view and options for a club room, trip adfvisor ratings and distance from an MTR. We eventually went for Harbour Grand - not in the perfect location I know but so close to an MTR, we have a club room and we're really looking forward to it :)

This site http://www.asiahotels.com/hotel_searches/index/sort:Default/direction:asc will give you some idea of the cost of hotels in HK.
I won't say you can't get cheaper prices elsewhere but it''s a good place to start.

I've stayed at quite a few different hotels in HK and as stated above don't worry too much about location because everywhere is easy to get to with the MTR.

Even The Regal Riverside which I stayed in for 3 months back in 1996, or say one of the hotels in Tsuen Wan where we used to put up some of staff until they found somewhere permanent to live are still locations which have good and fast transport connections and have shops and restaurants close by.

One point to remember is that hotel rooms in HK are generally on the broom cupboard size and that was one reason I chose a suite in the Regal Riverside which was 'uge.:rotfl:
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
