Burgled Last Night

Thanks again for all your comments!

Well we didn't sleep much last night but the main thing is we did manage to drop off which has made me feel better already. Can cope with waking up later on! The fact that we weren't too scared to go to sleep has made us feel a little better which should improve each day.

Had a chat with my parents at approx. 4AM (!) and we've all agreed to keep an eye on each other. We are aware that we may continue to do OK but then feel a bit wobbly a few weeks down the line and so will make full use of victim support. Can anyone relate to this?

It's made me feel better talking about it, whether with family and friends or here online. Will keep you posted and thanks again!

I read OPs post last night whilst I was in bed. I had to reaccess my situation. Hubby on nights, large boxer dog upstairs asleep in her bed by my bed. My bedroom door shut. My mobile, handbag, purse, all downstairs in the kitchen. Yes, all the windows and doors are locked, but from the OPs post the burglar forced their way in and helped themselves whilst OP and parents slept on. I got up, went downstairs, collected my, phone, bag, purse and took it upstairs with me.

I went down and got all my things too. However, I remember speaking to a friend a few weeks ago about something similar and she said that she leaves everything downstairs and doesn't hide it so that the burglars can take what they want and leave without having to turn the place upside down looking for things. Of course, they might wreck the place anyway, but it would be unlikely in the middle of the night if they thought someone was asleep upstairs.

My fiance was burgled in the summer - two weeks after moving into a new place. We were asleep in the house. They took my keys ....and the car. They also spooked the cat who ran away and didn't come back for a week which was awful as we weren't sure she'd find her way back as it was a new area. Thankfully she did.
We redecorated throughout which made us feel like we had "taken the house back" .

Three of my neighbours in the last six months (one family - 1 daughter, another on the way within 2 months (now here)), and my sister and her family (3 kids) got done while they slept just before Christmas one year - my BIL's alarm clock went off for work (shifts) as they were in and that made them scarper. Oh, and a single friend in a flat several years ago.

It's an horrific thing to happen. It really is. Sis handled it very well. Family up the road were extremely shaken - probably more to do with the fact their daughter was very young and his missus was 7-8 months pregnant.

Check out online advice as to keeping your property secure/safe.

The three that were done near me - and my sis - all had those PVC doors where they're locked from the inside but not from the outside. They reach up with something through the letterbox and open them from the inside.

Can you attach a separate porch? Fit an alarm? Add locks (and use them!).

Always take valuables upstairs. I used to leave my handbag in the lounge or kitchen, but it now always comes up to the bedroom with me. Also used to leave the porch door unlocked and not Chubb the inside door. Hindsight is a wonderful thing - I'm very glad I've not had to use it, even though it means learning from others' unfortunate mistakes. Oh, and never leave the car keys anywhere obvious downstairs - that's often what they break in to nick (the car, I mean!).

PS Hope you're doing okay. Horrible time :(

We were burgled a few years ago. Luckily we disturbed them as we came home and our lights from the car shone into the kitchen. They had only just broken in and only took a dvd and some money (which were on the kitchen table). They got in through our patio door but had tried to smash the kitchen window which had just cracked. I hate to think what they would have taken if they'd got further than the kitchen. It made me feel violated though and took months before I could come into the house without feeling uneasy.

Never been actually burgled, but had an attempted burglary which was bad enough. I was petrified, but think the burglars were worse off when they were confronted by my 60y/o dad brandishing a fake katana in a dressing gown which he'd forgotten to tie up so showed them his full 'glory'.

I'm petrified myself at the thought of actually being burgled and getting a dog has helped a lot. Even though he's more likely to go up to the burglar for a cuddle, he has a very strong loud bark and any bang would set him off, so I'd like to think that'd scare them off.

Why would you let an idiot stop you posting on this thread? Don't let them win.

Blimey, don't take it personally. Surely you know what forums are like by now!

I've been burgled twice - once they were disturbed (physically and in the head probably!), the other time they didn't take much but ransacked the whole house. Everything turned upside down. Found out several months later (the day I was due to go on holiday) that the thieving b*^&()()s had taken my passport. Holiday cancelled. GRRRR.

CHECK FOR YOUR PASSPORTS! Just reminded myself to say!

  • I've never heard of anyone being burgled in my neighbourhood in 50 years, but I dare say the Police might know different. My cousin used to live in Bramley, Leeds, reputedly the area with the worst burglary record in the country. She moved out after she had been burgled ten times in as many years. We had stuff stolen from my dads car once, when it was parked in Leeds city centre. I had a car stolen whilst on holiday in the Yorkshire Dales about 20 years ago, it turned up relatively undamaged a few days later, but minus the luggage in the boot.
