Aw thanks everybody, your replies, advice and support mean a lot so thanks very much xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Locksmith has been round, all locks changed so that's good!! Home insurance been informed, car insurance too (yep they took the car) plus debit cards cancelled and phone companies been informed.
I've asked to be informed of victim support but I'd not heard of support from crime prevention - will deffo get on to that too.
Im in bed now, just to relax and unwind a bit. Doubt I'll sleep well tonight as just feel scared but do understand this is natural and will pass eventually.
Between the MSE forum, stories from the police, family, friends and neighbours I can't believe how many burglary stories I've heard today! Its jut awful but proves people can move on from this experience.
I want to be one of them and will do whatever I need to do to et there!2014 Frugal Living Challenge

PS one really good thing is that they didn't turn the house upside down - there's no mess and nothing's been broken. So pleased about that, would have made everything so much worse.2014 Frugal Living Challenge

I am very sorry to hear that you have suffered in this way. Being burgled leaves you feeling very violated. The trauma must be even harder to come to terms with if it happens whilst you are sleeping. I am glad that yourself and your parents have people around offering help and support. Thinking of you and sending you a massive hug.The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

That's one of the reasons I got my Akita.
Have you thought about getting a big dog OP? It puts burglars off if they see a 10 stone dog lives there. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hey,
Sorry to hear this has happened to you. It really is a shock, and leaves you feeling violated for a while.
If you have difficulty sleeping now, you can pick up door alarms really cheaply from pound shops and the like. The noise is unmistakable, so it can really set your mind at ease. they've helped us immensely.
Just take it easy, and rest up. It sounds like you're taking all the right measures. There is hope for us yet0 -
Oh gosh what a horrible thing to happen and I'm you're all okay. Didn't you put the alarm on downstrairs before you all went to bed? Anyway perhaps it's a good thing you sleep throught it and you are all unharmed.
Take each day as it comes and I wish you and your family well. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
This happened to me just after Xmas last year. They ransacked everything, smashed open tins of biscuits and threw them all over my sofa, pushed the tree over, took kids Xmas gifts and took my car. I think I disturbed them as I woke up to go to the loo but I didn't realise until a few hours later.
I was a wreck for a while but at least no one was injured and the thieves were caught.
I hope you feel better soon xx0 -
I read OPs post last night whilst I was in bed. I had to reaccess my situation. Hubby on nights, large boxer dog upstairs asleep in her bed by my bed. My bedroom door shut. My mobile, handbag, purse, all downstairs in the kitchen. Yes, all the windows and doors are locked, but from the OPs post the burglar forced their way in and helped themselves whilst OP and parents slept on. I got up, went downstairs, collected my, phone, bag, purse and took it upstairs with me.
OP I hope you and your parents manage to get over this trauma, but you have helped me realise that I've been a bit lax with my possessions. All good wishes to you.0 -
This happened to me a few years ago now.
I was in bed and woke up to find I had been burgledThey had cleaned me out no mess though even took bin bags from under the sink to take the stuff away.
Worst of it for me was they got in via the front door and then left it wide open all night ! Which really got to me for some reason.
I hope you sort it out quickly and they catch them  They never caught mine sadly.
Police were really good in my case and reckoned that they heard me coughing which is why they left.
And they left my car (wasn't really worth taking) really
Debt free and Mortgage free thank you to all for your encouragement and advice :j

God, burglars really are the scum of the earth, it makes me so mad that some piece of s h i t can break into a persons house (or car) thinking they have a right to take your stuff, invade your privacy and violate your space
Touch wood, I've never experienced a house burglary, but have had my car broken into several times and that's bad enough. It's horrible to think someone has been in your private space.
So sorry OP. I can only imagine how unsettling it is, but sounds like you are doing all the right things.
Hope they are caught asap.Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0
