Mistake On Mum's Headstone

Hi I don't know if this in the right place so if not please can someone move it.

the problem is it cost £700 to have my mum's name (10 letter's) and the year she was born (4 number's) and the year she died (4 number's) put on her grave stone.
this was done last august 2006 (after many phone call's to the company doing it)
the only thing is I have just noticed that they have put 2006 instead of 2005 for the year she died.
can I have anything done about this.
under the warranty I am assuming that it has a gaurantee.
or would I have to pay them again to sort this number out.
if anyone has any advice please.
cw.

Pls be nice to all MSer's

Do you have it in writing what you asked for? If so I'd expect them to put it right at no cost. It might be more tricky if you have no documentary proof.

no it was all done over the phone.......but the solicitor may still have a copy.....I'll try there tomorrow......I didn't notice because I haven't been well myself.......and last time I went up was the beginning of june on mum's birthday......which I took some photo's of.....then I noticed it tonight when I was going through the photo's on my computer...........sooooooooooooo......bit of a shock since she died in november 2005 but the headstone say's 1933-2006........it was only put on last august as they was a problem with the will........so in the end I had to get the solicitor to sort it out............I will have afew word's with the solicitor tomorrow and see what they suggest...but if the wrong date is on the headstone wont someone say something eventually like the council that run the cemetery.........thanks.cw.

The headstone is you for you and your family :), no one else really minds whether there is a headstone or what is written on there. :o

I should hope with a business like that, they will rectify it for you.

I would be surprised if a company would take an order for an inscription for a head stone without getting the wording confirmed in writing. When I did this, they sent me a copy of the inscription which I had to sign to say it was correct. If the solicitor arranged it he should have a copy, if not contact the mason and ask if they have signed confirmation of the wording. Then you will know how made the mistake and can take it from there.

Hi, Just came across your post randomly, but just thinking about how to help you, as my friend is a letter carver and I could ask him. Has the lettering been carved (actually engraved?) This makes quite a difference to how easily they can adjust it. I guess the real question is whether it should just be left to them to worry about since they have made the mistake, but might be worth me asking my friend how easy it is to amend. (and the cost of it) and I'll ask him what happens if he has ever made an error!

    thanks
yes it is craved on then painted in black
I also took a picture of the plot number.
number on plot should be 10649
but it looks like it is 10549
and number on headstone should be 2005
    but instead it says 2006

there was a problem as mum's was the last name to go on the grave.
and they could only fit her name 10 letters and the years of birth and death.
    I'll send you a picture.
    thanks

  • Try going straight to the people who made the mistake first, if you have no joy I would go to trading standards, they may be able to help.

In this case, I wouldn't worry about having written proof. The Death Certificate (copy of) would be sufficient if it's available. You know when your Mum passed on - I am sure they won't argue about it.

Also funeral directors and everything to do with this business are very good and understanding towards their customers - it is a sensitive issue.

Calmly explain the mistake, you aren't asking for money back or anything, just a correction of their mistake. A very important mistake.

They may not be happy about this, however, they would have to be heartless to fob you off in this case. I am sure they wouldn't. If they did, which I doubt, you can send a letter which you can obtain from Trading Standards.

    Good luck, keep us posted.
