Dog bit leaflet distributor via letterbox

I'd be wondering why exactly he had his hand that way through her letterbox. As someone said above, it must've been quite a way through for the dog to bite it, far too far in to reasonably deliver a leaflet.

No fingers ever went near the entrance when I've posted leaflets or by hand letters in the past, and our Postie's do neither.

    Very dodgy imo...

My dog Lucy is always going nuts when leaflets come through the letterbox - if she could, she'd definitely bite a hand or finger.

But it's not possible because the letterbox is the fast closing type and fingers or hands can't actually get through.

If the guy delivering the leaflet had his whole hand through the letterbox I would wonder what he was up to, and be glad the dog saw him off.

I don't think its that dodgy, I recall posting leaflets/booklets many years ago and sometimes if the box is stiff or has those brush things then you almost had to put your hand in so the flimsy leaflet could go all the way in.

can't help on the legalities though. I have a insane amount of leaflets delivered each week, a necessary evil I guess but really annoying, never though about a notice to stop them.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't have 'beware of the dog' notices as it could be assumed you are admitting that your dog is a threat. Better to have a notice saying that the dog may be loose, implying that you don't want him lost.

Because of this I wouldn't include the dog in the request for no leaflets .

    Thanks everyone.

Her letterbox doesn't have a brush on the inside or a flap anymore so there is nothing to prevent letters etc being put through by the postman easily enough. In fact she said the flap was broken off by the postman forcing a parcel through the letterbox in the first place. She didn't replace it to ensure it wouldn't happen again. So no force is needed to put anything through the door and definitely no hand needs to be put through!

Oh and just to add, the dog has never been bothered by the letterbox at all before. She told me that any letters just get left on the mat as they don't interest him. I think it is down to the fact that as she had gone out, it was the dog protecting his home and he didn't like the fact that a hand he didn't know, appeared in his property :D. To me that's a good dog.

The sign is up now and we shall wait and see what happens.

Many thanks again for the advice.
  • This happened to me about six years ago with my GSD Jess. Apparently the free newspaper distributor was bitten on the thumb(how on earth!) by my dog and needed 6 stitches. The first I knew was one evening when 2 policemen turned up and wanted to check she wasn't dangerous. There was never a nicer friendlier dog than her, but she would kill anyone touching her letterbox! The police said if I hadn't had Beware of Dog notice in the window, which was our family joke, she could have been put down. Dont know how much truth was in that! Anyway police were happy she was friendly enough, I sent her flowers and an appology, and never heard anymore.

This happened to me a good few years ago now, my dog was awful for ripping up mail so I had a word with my postie so he always knocked and I had a "no junk mail crazy dog inside" sign on my door.

One day I came home and found some ripped up junk mail with a bit of blood on and an odd bit of plastic, I checked mutt saw no sign of injury and thought no more about it till a few days letter when the police knocked.

Apparently dog had somehow managed to take some woman's thumb nail off!! As soon as he said it I clicked what the peice of "plastic" was! I felt awful, but as I pointed out I had a no junk mail sign and she should not have been posting c*ap and I explained my arrangement with the postie, (at this stage mutt was on his knee giving him big licks).

Said he had to come as there had been a complaint, it was obvious dog was not dangerous, and the woman had ignored sign, he then went on to say that even if there was no sign, as the mail was unsolicited then there would be no come back.. Although, apparently if he had got the postman it could have been more serious.

This was well over 10 years ago so dont know if things have changed or not?

When my old boy caught a burglar by the neck (he didn't draw blood just pinned the scroat by his throat), one of the cops gave me 2 beware of the dog stickers and told me to put them up sharpish and a friend came home couple of years ago and discovered his Doberman sat next two two human fingers wagging his stump furiously and the window half open. He called the police and they took the fingers and a statement, there wasn't any come back from the burglar.

Has the advice changed regarding dog signs? I always thought if there was a sign and you were bitten it was tough.

    I have this one.
Downmarket, but effective, I find. With the added bonus that it's stopped the leaflet drops and the Jehovah's. :)51odMlyLBIL.jpg
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I have an external letter box. Protects my post and the person delivering the post.

Bit annoyed by the 'trying it on' comments. I occasionally deliver for work and if there is no sign and I get bitten you can be damn sure I'll be lodging a complaint for compensation - dogs bites hurt!

Discussion as to how far the post person put their hand through the letter box is moot. They got bit. End of.
