Company offering to get council tax refund

Options
I had a call from a company called Hamnett Marketing informing me that I could be in the wrong council tax band and I could be owed ££.
I checked with my neighbours and found out that my house is on a different band. How does this work, why am I paying more than others on my street?

Ask the Valuation Office Agency, part of HMRC.

    http://www.voa.gov.uk/

They are responsible for banding dwellings for Council Tax.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I had a call from them, I was in Band C instead of B, Hamnett Marketing have managed to lower my tax band and reclaim the £3400 overpayments I had made over the years.
Its all to do with when government set the council tax bands back in the 90s, they messed up big time, there are millions of homes that are paying the wrong tax. Thanx to Hamnett Marketing otherwise I would never have known

In my opinion the VOA will try everything in their power to put you off from claiming back money your money. Its costing them a lot of money

It costs the VOA very little as it is the council who refund overpaid CT not the VOA.

But once the company pointed it out to you, you could have just as easily done the job yourself with
a couple of phonecalls, and you would have not have had to pay them a penny.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

We had a similar experience when my husband applied to the VOA. I believe that the VOA tell everyone that they can make a claim themselves but look for every reason to knock you back.

My neighbour told us about the company called Hamnett Marketing who kindly assisted us to make a strong claim.

    Today we are £6540 richer

They both are two different agencies of the same Government, so why won't they favour one another?
The VOA don't particularly care what the council do and certainly don't show any favoritism (quite often the opposite) - they make the decision and the council are obliged to follow it.

I can honestly say that I've not seen anything but trouble with people who have used companies to try to get their property re-banded and the level of customer service provided by them has often been abysmal. Those who have gone straight to the VOA have generally had a lot less issues.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Ive not used Hamnett Martketing myself but my work colleague has and she received a council tax rebate in 1000s. They were actually very helpful. She did recommend them to me but I don't need my band changing. :D

Thankyou guys for all your opinions, will be getting Hamnett Martketing to reclaim the overpayments I have been making on my council tax.

I know some of you said that I can try myself, but really I don't have the time. Im working every day and when I'm off I would rather spend the time with my lads than trying to reclaim a few grand.
  • I did my Council tax rebate through Hamnett Marketing & I just received my payout. What I liked about the service was that fact that I didn't need to get involved myself and they handled every step of it
