My fil was a mechanic for years, recently retired,he would always do our work for free. He did a simple service-changed fuel filter, air filter etc.
Hubby gets it home, next day it doesnt start. Turns out on diesels you have to bleed the fuel line to draw the fuel after changing the filter.fil didnt, said it didnt need to be done.....£500 for it to be replaced, told fil what happened, his response? 'oh...' needless to say., never used him again.
Fool me once, shame on you.Fool me twice, shame on me.0 -
Just don't get him to do anymore work for you in the future.0

I had my FIL people MOT and service my car after he nagged us to let his garage do it as the dealers service was very expensive.
On the way back it broke down on the motorway. Its a unusual vehicle and it transpires during the service they had damaged it.
£700 repair bill.
We totted up the cost of the car repair against the massive family fall out complaining would cause and kept our mouths shut.
I was very very angry. but sometimes you have to know when to fight your battles.
I have gone to the dealer since with no complaint.
OMG thats awful. I must admit I would have let FIL know what happened in this case and hoped he would have offered to pay for it.0 -

I guess its even worse if someone is doing something for free for you. You would think that person would at least offer.
I wouldnt have been happy to be £500 out but its difficult. Next time though I would be a bit blunt and say no way are you doing it cost me £500 last time.0 -
People are instinctively helpful I think, and so when you say "Oh I need a such and such" they will usually remember a friend of a friend who is great at such and suches!
When it comes to using family recommendations, I always steer clear - it gets too messy if there's a problem afterwards.
It does sound a little as though you knew this guy was a bit flakey before you even paid him, so I think on this occasion, you have only yourself to kick!0 -
I'm about to pay for a new floor in my kitchen, after a member of the extended family redid the room two years ago. The rest of the kitchen is fine, but the floor shouldn't be peeling up this quickly. My mum doesn't want me to say anything, but I won't use that person again.
It's really awkward, but at least you have a ready answer the next time SIL suggests the chap does any work for you. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I don't think its worth the hassle saying anything.
MIL used her sisters SIL for some work done once and he didn't do a very good job. Six years later MIL and her sister still don't speak because MIL said something.
Chalk it up as a lesson learned.0 -
He should have done it for free (apart from the materials).
My father in law, uncle in law (?) and brother are helping me build a brick BBQ. They are all doing it for free. I will supply the bricks and some food, they will supply their wisdom and muscle.
I would speak to your brother and get him to talk to her about it if you think it would make a difference but you've paid for someone else now.
Downside with that is he may come over and (1) see you improved it and feel bad OR (2) will think he is better than he is.0 -
I personally would let them know as you wouldn,t want another family to go through what you have been through.
Families are a funny thing though , must admit. My dad will not ask my husband is do anything in their house as he hates the fact he would have to pay him yet it will call him someone else to do the job pay way off the price and not always 100% off with the finish. We just leave them to it now.:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0
