Paid family member for painting and its awful

At the end of the day you know the situation better than any of us - if it was me I know that there are some extended family members who I could say 'get back here and sort it out', theres some who I'd say 'there are a couple of bits that need finishing off' and theres some which I wouldn't say anything to because its not worth it.
End of the day, I wouldn't choose to use family to be honest. I generally wouldn't recommend friends or family for these sort of things to avoid this exact situation, and by the same token am more than happy to help people out (and often do) but generally try and avoid offering to do it all - ie I'm happy to get stuck in and get involved but only if its your project which we are doing together, rather than me taking ownership and ending up in a position where you aren't happy with my work...0 -

To be fair, last time he did a decent job. Not professional but good enough.
I dont really want to get him back. Its not just the missed bits its the general workmanship too.
He is getting on a bit so I just think maybe hes just not capable enough anymore. Trouble is hes one of those who thinks he can do anything (if theres money involved) whereas obviously he cant.0 -

Then I think you've answered your own question...0 -
If you were not happy with the standard of work then you shouldnt have paid him until he did the work properly.
Thats what I dont understand, why you didnt point out the faults after he had completed it.
I think if you want a job doing properly you have to do it yourself really or pay properly. You get what you pay for usually.0 -
Some friends of mine paid their neighbour's son to tile their bathroom on recommendation. OMG you've never seen such a shoddy job. The tiles weren't vertical, and it was the whole bathroom he did, including 3 sides of a soil pipe where the tiles were wonky. He did it for them while they were away for the weekend, so it wasn't like they could even stop him when it started going wrong.Make £2025 in 2025

I had my FIL people MOT and service my car after he nagged us to let his garage do it as the dealers service was very expensive.
On the way back it broke down on the motorway. Its a unusual vehicle and it transpires during the service they had damaged it.
£700 repair bill.
We totted up the cost of the car repair against the massive family fall out complaining would cause and kept our mouths shut.
I was very very angry. but sometimes you have to know when to fight your battles.
I have gone to the dealer since with no complaint.
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -
I honestly thought this was going to be some issue over a portrait they were expecting you to put up in the lounge or something.
.
That is what I thought too !
You did have 3 options - however in reality, based on what you have said (i.e. it is too late for him to rectify the problem as it has already been sorted and you don't want to upset the family dynamic) you only really have one option and that is to suffer the loss and to never use his services again.0 -
OP, I am really sorry to hear about your problems, but I don't think you stand a chance of getting anything back: just put it down to a bad experience and move on. I would never ever ever (because of previous bad experience many years ago,) ever ever use someone I know, to do ANYthing.
Whether it's a work colleague, or a family friend or acquaintance or neighbour or whatever; you have very little comeback if something goes wrong, and it can cause friction between friends, colleagues, neighbours or family members, I would rather pay twice as much for something, and have a professional do it.(•_•)
;64994654]To be fair, wife did ask him to redo a few bits when he was there. In the end, he just was not interested.
He played us I think knowing that we couldnt really kick off big time because of the family involvement.
All you can do now is chalk it up to experience and never use him again. If SIL asks you'll have to explain why but tactfully.0
