Profile of someone likely to become long-term unemployed?

Yeah people who say dumb down the CV are clueless.
Dumb is down and the question will be for example 'I see you were office manger, but you dont appear to have done the job of one'
Or 'why have you not progressed in career'
and so on....................
I thought you haven't had an interview In years?0 -
ANYONE can end up being unemployed if they work.
ANYONE can end up being on long-term unemployment if there are not enough jobs.
It's not random, though. The choices that a person made in the past, and that they continue to make, will often decide whether they walk into a job the day after losing the previous one, or if they are years between positions.0 -
I suppose for me it would be skills based, if someone doesn't have job ready skills or recent working experience it becomes harder and harder to be taken on, and after 2-3 years of unemployment possibly unemployable.0

I refuse to believe that someone can be rendered "unemployable". I think that would be a terrible fate for anyone. Surely just a little updating of their skills is all that is required.0 -

That response is pretty rude...
Do you have any idea what it's like to be less able than the majority and have judgements made based on nothing but an un-informed opinion?
Not everyone is able to do everything that others can do - looks can be deceiving.
For the third time, I wasn't referring to tomterm8 in particular when I asked the question. The first part of his post talked about people who are old and/or unfit being unable to do certain types of jobs. He then went on to give an example re supermarket work. He didn't mention any specific illness or disability. I was asking a question about how fit people in general need to be in order to do supermarket work. I don't know the answer to the question as I've never worked in a supermarket.
I do wish people would stop reading between the lines and assuming that every time someone asks a genuine question they're having a pop at someone.0 -
I think one of the problems that will hit in years to come is that of the single parent or couple who chose to have children rather than build a career whilst they are young. They have been given top-ups to income based on having children, and have become used to a high level of disposable income. Then one by one the children leave home and child benefit and tax credits stop. At this point there is little hope of escaping this poverty trap, as they have neither the qualifications or experience to get a job anywhere near the level of income that they are used to getting.
Solution to this? I have no idea!0 -
I’ve got to say you’d have to be pretty bad to be unemployable where I am, loads of jobs around here!0

Who said that? I never did. I am not saying I have been asked this as I have not dumbed down anything.I thought you haven't had an interview In years? We’ve had to remove your signature. Yes. People who won't take responsibility for their own actions, who resent authority, and who are poor at foregoing gratification now for gratification later are far more likely to be long-term unemployed than people who take the opposite tack.
(Hi Bill J, not a swipe, just an observation)
Interestingly, those are also three qualities found in abundance within financiers and politicians.
Perhaps access to nepotism would be a more accurate deficiency?.

I was told by a prospective employer that I would not fit in with their team - I was older than the employer and her team were in their 20's so she wasn't going to want someone of 50+ in there showing them up.
Having a visual impairment puts me at the bottom of the pile where employers are concerned because they are fearful as they are with anybody who has an impairment.
it is not from lack of experience or qualifications so it must be age and the fact I have a disability.
You were told by an employer you would not fit in with their team? - I very much doubt that!
As for making judgemental assumptions that its your age and disability that employers have concerns with, maybe you should be looking at your arrogance towards employers and their staff! :mad:0
