The usual reason for this problem arising is where the passenger has already taken an option, either direct with the airline or through another agency. The airline computer system then sees what appears to be a duplicate booking and cancels the second one. Of course, the first reservation automatically cancels if it is not confirmed and you end up with no booking at all. You should ask your friend whether he had looked at the same flights elsewhere, or indeed whether you had done so on his behalf.

Yes. I've heard of this happening before but in this case not in the slightest.

We had planned this holiday together for some and were waiting for the virgin flights for our dates to be released. We were sat next to each other on different laptops when we actually booked the flights. Neither of us had actually attempted to book any flights before that point.
