Can I ask why you think this?

It is because the leather is thinner and causes the feet to spread more. It wasn't just through training I was told this (I have worked for Clarks, Stead and Simpson, Truform, Curtess and Oliver and Timpsons and trained shoe fitter in each) , I was told this by a paediatric foot doctor (can't spell the word now!:D ). Many people are likely to go up a size as opposed to a half size if the ones chosen are a little too small.
Also be aware that many Clarks stores are now franchises so not wholly controlled by H/O.
Also be aware that (for example) a 5G in one style will be different to a 5G in another so varying in widths and by half a size can be normal. AND everyone has one foot slightly bigger than another.

S'ok I've worked in shoes for a long time too :)

I also have had lots of conversations with my daughters orthotist and his opinion is very different.

I dont see a problem with trainers for children. A well fitting trainer is going to be better than a badly fitted shoe?

I suppose everyones got varying opinions on feet & foot health just like everything else.

I was advised not to put training shoes on little ones as they grip too much causing them to be uncertain on their feet/fall over etc etc

And Hapless is right, having worked for Clarkes. They do not sell trainers for young ages. I asked in Clarkes a while back as we wanted some trainers for her.. but now I understand the reasoning behind it, she wears shoes daily and Wellies for puddles!

Clarks sell trainers as first walking shoes :)

Not where I went they don't, however, maybe this was because I was buying the ones after Cruisers? (I'm sad... I keep them all!)

    It was Clarks in Mothercare.
  • our clarkes sell trainers for my 1 year old. i haven't bought any, they don't seem to have any styles that suit his feet.

now that wellies have been mentioned - where do you get wellies for feet with a high instep? i've tried everywhere i can think of but roo's feet won't be squeezed into them.

he is a half size bigger on one foot so i always buy the larger size. and i agree about different styles meaning you need to have a different size - his feet only measure an 8 (the small one measures 7.5) but his new shoes are 8.5 because the 8 didn't fit. they were £12 in the sale :D

our clarkes has a machine that they stand on and it measures the foot, but it doesn't do smaller than size 9.

My Clarkes has about 6 shoes suitable for my little one, they had about 4 cruising shoes and now it's only a few walking shoes. It annoys me because when i go to get more it's the same styles. I wonder if this is because it's a small add on to Mothercare? There is a Clarkes in most towns but to be honest, it's easier to take her to the large estate with all the big shops.

Are there quite a few shoes available for size 5?

I don't think you'll have too difficult a problem with this size. My son walked early (9 months) but was either a 4 or 4.5 when he needed his first shoes. . I had a lot more difficult job with my daughter who wasn't quite a size 2 when she learned to walk at 12 months, and found I had to go thru to the nearest city to either start rite or kids at clink and even then I only had a choice of 2 styles.

Wow, my friends little boy walked at 9 months many years ago... they said it looked so cute... a little tiny midget walking so small!

My daughter started walking at 12 months - on her birthday in fact - but then stopped and started walking fully 14 months. She went into a size 3, now is a 5 8 months later.
  • i had one of those too but he got away with more for longer because he was so much smaller than he should have been. my current toddler is enormous and people glare and make comments about him having a dummy at naptime, and not talking properly

he began to walk and then stopped for a month or so too. my friend's baby was crawling at 5 months and walking by 8 months, she had her hands full :rotfl:
