It's the same for the science graduates here, watching BBC science programmes. These manage to be a combination of superficiality and taking ages to get through very simple concepts.

DH gets annoyed at Brian Cox's seeming take over of all types of science programme and being an expert in everything.

However Brian is easy on the eye and I'm no scientist, so have no such concerns:o.

DH, who doesn't watch football, got Spain in the office sweepstakes, much to the annoyance of the football mad person who started it and who pulled Iran.

I'm guessing here that Iran aren't as good as Spain? You can tell from this how avidly I have been watching the World Cup.

Not easy enough for me I'm afraid. Agree with Dr. Tifosi. That Wonders of the Body (or whatever it was called) was looking promising, then spoiled for me when he started looking down a microscope. Telescope yes, microscope no. Surely there are other decent science communicators in other scientific disciplines? Are we only allowed one or two token scientists on TV?

    Rant over :)

I thought you could treat saucepans and so forth to make them kosher? Bury them in sand, or boil them, or something?

Boil them, but lots of items won't stand that treatment and it is difficult to get in all the joints beforehand to clean them completely. So, a metal teaspoon is easy to do, but a knife with a wooden handle is very difficult. A food processor might not survive immersion in boiling water for a prolonged period, for example. It obviously depends how punctilious you are.

No they are not. Though from my point of view, Spain also has the best looking team (or did last time). Casillas is gorgeous. My best ever result is rank 27 nationally at fantasy NFL (40,000 players) by picking players purely on looks, so my method does have some scientific merit;)

Anyone ever used Emla cream? My ear is really starting to hurt now and it was recommended by a Doctor friend. It's bloody expensive though.

Working in an analytical department rather than having a sweep we have to name golden boot and the results (WDL) of all the group matches and that is just for round one - in future rounds we will also have to predict scores
    I think....

The law of unintended consequences. I had 32 pairs of white socks of DS2's to wash, amongst his home-from-uni clutter. Having drilled him in whites always being washed separately he had calculated that it was often a lot less hassle to go to Primark and buy new pairs of socks than buy washing powder and pay for the launderette and waste hours washing and drying the dirty socks.

Err... why didn't he buy some dark socks, if he was out buying socks, and then the next time he had dirty socks he'd have been able to wash them.

Someone said to me after I'd bought my house that it took them a year to feel as though their house was 'theirs' after they'd bought their own. That took the pressure off which I was feeling - it's OK to 'grow' into owning a place.

Thanks. It really does feel like mine, and like home, but ...

I'm guessing that the url is because it's not being sold in a multipack rather than that it is for assisting lone parents in reducing their levels of chaos.

I love your turn of phrase! :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Caffeine helps migraines. It does something to the blood vessels in the brain I think. I read it online and I will have a coke if I feel one coming on. It doesn't help regular headaches.

Fascinating. I didn't know that. So that indicates that my kind of debilitating headache is a mini-migraine not just a bad normal headache. That's what they feel like to me, but it's interesting to have evidence to back it up. Thanks.

Bet there are more weeds in my garden than yours. Even after the efforts of the past couple of months.

    10 years of students...

Though I think I have also inherited some kind of apple and plum trees.

I probably win on weeds just ATM. Friendly builder came and dug the whole lot up and removed a tree for me in October, and then had an accident, and a lot of trouble with some of his work for other people, and so hasn't yet been back to finish the job, although he is fine now and working through his backlog and says he will do mine next month. Since the next thing that needs doing is to level out the enormous mound of earth and make the whole garden properly flat (because it's only small and I want to put the trampoline in the corner not the middle which was previously the only flat enough bit), there was no point in "doing gardening" until the flattening had happened. I've grown an amazing collection of weeds since October. Several feet high lots of them. At present I am enjoying 3 species of poppy - little orange ones, big deep red ones, and buds that are about to be enormous purple ones. :)

I don't feel bad about the state of the garden, though, because the builder's problems make it clearly not my fault. :)

Hope you're OK, Gen. Have a good weekend if possible, enjoying stuff with the family and trying not to think about the week to come. x

What Yorkie said. So nearly half way. :T
