    Blame UK tax laws.

Coupled with, how many families would fly over to Amsterdam and then back to Heathrow to save money?

Just realised that we are failing to do PN's job in her absence - all this talk of flying should warrant a posh alert for flying anywhere, regardless of the route or the class. ;)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Does Michaels (or any other NP) have any tips for finding decent LH fares on J or W class?

I don't have enough miles to upgrade at the moment...

Can route through AMS or CDG just as easily/cheaply as LHR/LGW due to starting from Scotland, and can split ticket purchases if there's an easy saving to be made on APD?

Is there some secret moneysaving thing that you all do or is it just a matter of using skyscanner (or similar) and playing with dates?

If you know anyone who works for an airline Hamish, they may be able to book you discounted tickets on their staff allowance. This is outside of their normal allowance for family. However there are strict rules that they must not be used for business travel or promoted as though selling as a business. My husband regularly does this for friends, but it has to be for people he knows as the penality for getting it wrong could be loss of his own entitlements:eek:. ETA: they'd also be responsible for your behaviour on the flight.

It's a tough subject to raise though, as it is generally offered rather than asked for.

    Glad Kiwi happy. :)

Worried about you, though. It's not good for you to have all that extra stress and be cut off from online support like us, especially since you live in the middle of nowhere. If it all gets overwhelming, please phone me. You have my number, don't you?

If there is nobody there who could actually help with any of the tasks, I could drive down to help, but obviously I wouldn't be able to leave here until after school dropping off time, and I'd need to leave in time to get back here by the time DD needs picking up from after school club. But you are not alone in all of this. :)

    x2

Wish I was something I could do to help you out lir. But I'm pretty sure there isn't. I think the best I can do is send you a dodgy hug :grouphug:

Hope you get through tomorrow (and the following days of course) in one piece as we're not going to hear from you for a while :(

I do have people locally I can call on I just don't like to. I like that here I can go 'whhaaaaaa' and you know I'm not obliquely asking anything of any of you. :o:D

I'll be ok, promise. My period just started ( I probably skipped one last time ) so that should help make me feel less.....reactive.

Practically speaking, if I cannot get big dog then vets will keep her an extra night. Because she so recently had a major surgery there is no chance of her coming home early, and I'd rather she stayed longer rather than shorter this time, of all of them, she is the one who'll cope well.

If I can access wifi or anything I'll drop in. But if I don't no news is always good news. :)

    Not any more. :(

Used to be able to do that quite regularly in the ME, and pre-2001 even jump seats on cargo runs, but my airline contacts have moved on/retired/etc.

And to be fair, we so rarely fly long haul these days that it's not really a big loss, I earn enough points on regional airlines with business travel to be able to get a couple of free flights a year for city breaks in Europe, which generally keeps me happy. :)

But taking Mrs McT away for a (very) long haul trip in the not too distant future and as it's for a bit of a celebration thing was thinking of upgrading to W or J as we've not done that in ages. Hence the query around tips and tricks..... :)

Of course we didn't think you were asking for anything. That doesn't mean we can't choose to offer, though. :)

Glad you have some kind of backup plan. Hope everything goes all right. It sounds as though you don't need any of us to drive over, but if you get to the point where you need somebody to vent at and haven't got any internet to vent on, then call or text me - I assume you'll still have your mobile even when your landline is down??.

I still have my mobile :).

I'll be at posh hospital tomorrow if I get time I'll log on there too.

Even DH doesn't get the flight deck jump seat, though he can take a spare cabin crew one if it is available. Bl**dy uncomfortable though. I don't get why people want to say they've done it. (ETA: not talking about Hamish here, more the people who put it on their bucket list). Pre 9/11 I got to go in the cockpit on Concord over the Atlantic. It was impressive, but I wouldn't want to go up there for very long either, bit cramped.

We flew to Glasgow once to check out a secondhand car and when we liked it, we bought it and we tore up the return tickets (they weren't transferable). Never had any comeback. Having said that no-shows must be very common. When we returned from our recent Italian jaunt the supposedly full flight had empty seats so we got to have three between the two of us.

Basically we should posh alert this entire thread and be done with it.

Today, I finished emptying the compost heaps, and went to capel cottage nursery and bought plants.

    Need to sow seeds soon...
