What is it with the lack of forecast rain? I think I'm going to have to battle the dodgy garage door (again) and take the lawnmower for a tour of the back garden now...
We have it all. Which is fine, because of the house work.
The French drain that went in last week clearly isn't doing the job too, The garden table and chairs are sitting ankle deep in mud next to the French drain.
. Things like that are getting me down too. 0 -
You probably just need a 'nudge' to get you started.lemonjelly wrote: »Right now I'm trying to psyche myself up!:eek:lostinrates wrote: »If I have a long term home help it means less money for the progression fund.
. Not sure how I feel about that pay off.
Almost done, four becomes one. Sounds fun.
I found my old a stead phone in one of the boxes. Poor thing, off to the tip.
You may find it has value in a museum...
Yesterday was full time chauffeur duties (kids had first drama lesson plus communion class plus birthday parties and should have had football if they weren't over booked) which we also fit around a tesco trip, a debenhams trip (for free lunch) and a trip to sains including a major TU double nectar points mission. Oh forgot going to the agents to resign the agreement and the tenants moving in. Having just spent 300 on plumber it now needs the chimney reflashed (or taken down if it is not much more), don't know how people make profit on rentals
I think....0 -

According to an old (2005?) Economist article I have never found since they don't.
On average, equity investors make inflation + 2-3%, bond investors make inflation + 1-2%, cash savers make inflation plus a tiny bit and BTLers lose 1%. All per year.0 -
We have rain.
Off to friends for lunch. I feel a bit hungover after dinner with them last night
taking Michael Bubl! in the car with me for a bit of uplift. And gin for when we get there. Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

lir, when I post things like that, you tell me firmly that my kids are turning out to be Nice People, so I must be doing OK because the other stuff doesn't matter. So I say to you, your animals are well cared for, and fir knows that you love him and is happy to be married to you. Therefore you are doing OK because the other stuff doesn't matter.
Believe me, I know, I really know, how frustrating it is to have a house that needs "sorting out" in a big way, and only to be making progress at a glacial pace. My house needs a different kind of sorting out from yours, and my reasons for making slow progress are different from yours, but I imagine the frustration at not being able to do more and do it faster is probably quite similar. But truly, it is the people and animals who matter.
OK, so fir is slow at tidying/cleaning. I'd be willing to bet that his contribution to overall progress is better than DD's, which is frequently backwards rather than forwards. :rotfl:Doozergirl wrote: »The day I realised that all the people I know, almost without exception, with clean houses have cleaners was enlightening.
For me, it was the day my friends told me a long list of things that only I could do (beginning with mothering my newly fatherless children) and then said that somebody else could clean my house.lostinrates wrote: »Unless you actually have a daily or housekeeper a cleaner shouldn't have to and cannot effectively sort and bish.
True. But if you don't have to do the cleaning yourself, you have more time and energy to use for the sorting. You do not need to get it all sorted in order to start having a cleaner. When they arrive, you tell them "Please clean these rooms, but not those ones, because I haven't sorted those yet".Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I took over being the captain this year. Owing to a few issues, we've had 1 or 2 players leave. We did have more, but 2 have come back.
I took over, as our captain drinks like the proverbial fish, & also had favourites, so some people kept getting left out of the team for no good reason, & it was very demoralising. One did say he wasn't playing this year (but called me when he'd found out I was captain to say he did want to play, just not for him...)
Anyways, there are always 2 cup games at the beginning. We got knocked out of both cups. Old captain was on holiday & asked how we got on, & when told said "ah well, it was always going to be tough" (which made me curse in a very NSFW way).
Anyway, we played our first league match & afterwards were top of the league! 2nd league match yesterday, & we won that too, so possibly still top!
In fairness, we did play one of the weaker teams. However, I feel a certain sense of something.
What has pleased me, is how supportive others have been.
My issue now though, is how to balance the people who do play & don't. If no-one is away, I have to leave 3 players out.
My rule, is if you lose 2 games in a row, then you miss the next game. I kinda want to mix it up a little more than that though if possible (without wanting my players to lose or become dis-illusioned by missing too many games).
When I was playing 5 a side regularly it was always if you turned up you got to keep your place, so if you missed games because of holiday, whatever etc you had to wait until someone else missed a week to get back into the team. But then we weren't in a competitive league so results were kind of irrelevant (in fact we preferred to get relegated!).0 -
Teams, mostly soccer, I've played for have had an unstated rule: turn up for training every week and you'll get picked after the 1 or 2 very talented players who will definitely be in the side even if we have to pick them up from the wake (in some cases their own!).0

I would be OK a lot less of the time if I didn't have a cleaner.Doozergirl wrote: »Do the things that you love and some sorting. Let someone else do the rest for a bit, until you are okay. You aren't okay right now, and I'm sure most people who have cleaners etc are okay. Maybe they wouldn't be okay if they didn't, who cares. You deserve someone to help you. What you try and cram into a day leaves me feeling exhausted. Even without your health issues you should consider having a cleaner.
It is far easier to be in the routine of tidying up because the cleaner is due, than a routine of tidying and cleaning yourself. At least when the cleaner is due you can't procrastinate and delay til tomorrow.
Even my messy kids understand that the cleaner arriving means that rooms need to be tidy before hand.
Expect a posh alert from PN, those boxes would be made of cardboard in anyone else's home.
Yes, yes, yes and yes. I totally agree with all four of those points.lostinrates wrote: »The French drain that went in last week clearly isn't doing the job too, The garden table and chairs are sitting ankle deep in mud next to the French drain.

Edit: here is a 'before' pic
I'm only surprised I didn't find an abandoned shopping trolley or similar in there.
Mine still needs doing. Every day I have off work it rains.
Went to the tip today to remove the remainder of the three storage heaters (all now gone, hoorah!), got very rained on.
On the way to the tip saw a little old lady who looked as though she was on her way to church (resplendent in her Sunday bonnet), she pulled out onto the road facing in the wrong direction and then drove the wrong way round a roundabout. It was like watching something in slow-motion. Nobody tooted, they just drove calmly out of her way. Very bizarre. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I did, cheers. You probably just need a 'nudge' to get you started.(
Done the exams. Bit disappointed to only get 24 out of 31 on the first. Upped my game for the 2nd though!
Now to reward myself...;)
LIR, perhaps rewarding yourself with each achievement may help? There has been much progression with yourself. We don't want to be focussing on the negatives all the time, do we?
Personally, I admire how you are constantly on the go, doing something, busy. Wish I were as active!
Agree with what LydiaJ has posted btw...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
