To be honest I'm not sure I could hack working at a library. Every time I go in I see a polite librarian having to explain to someone shouting about wibble-monsters that they should't eat the books.

Since they closed the asylums those guys have to go somewhere and libraries are free, and warm...

(This post is exagerated but not by much...)

I am however strongly considering going out to specifically buy some lamb to roast on Sunday...
I've never been out and bought meat to roast. I have roasted 2-3 turkey crowns at Xmas, at the parents' house etc. But, for me, I've never bought/roasted any meat.

What'll you do with it all?

I last had roast lamb well over 30-40 years ago; I love lamb.

My eyes have, recently, been drawn to those roasting packs - where you get a tin foil takeaway style container, with some roast joint in it .... that you just put in the oven.... costing about £3. I might get round to getting one of those sometime in the next 1-3 years or so.

I've also got - and am intrigued by - roasting bags.... but, of course, never seen one actually used so petrified they catch light or melt or something :)

I've more irrational kitchen phobias than you can toss a cheese sandwich at.

I've got silicone bakeware.... scared it'll melt.
I've got dishes.... scared they'll split in half when they get hot.

Too scared to use most things.

    Roast meat = freezer.

I've just had a slightly-raised-voice conversation (and subsequently hung up) with a cold caller. They didn't want to sell me life insurance, but wanted to discuss my current policy. It was quite difficult to hear, but I think Shaun was trying to tell me I was paying too much. I told him that was unlikely and that I didn't want to discuss my financial set up with someone who had called me out of the blue and to please remove my number from his database. Shaun wasn't very happy about this and kept stressing he wasn't trying to sell me anything.

I don't have life insurance. I explained to Shaun why I don't (no dependents, death in service payment) and he didn't seem to believe me. He was still trying to tell me I was paying too much. I hope Shaun has a nice Bank Holiday weekend.

What an irritw4t (my word) .... I hate those calls that assume that you must have something.

You're right about not needing life assurance as you're single. Let the beneficiaries sort it out .... they'll be hoping there's a few bob somewhere around .....

When will you get to see your updated mortgage balance?

It is now showing an updated balance :D

I twigged, and could imagine it being a very satisfying feeling that the money was not frittered but used to pay down a long term debt.

There was also a bit of wondering if there could be joy in spending any of it on 'fun', Nikks further posts where she then went on to say that she was keeping an eye on her tendency to be "quite good at saving" provided a balance.

Indeed - this way it is a gift that will keep on giving via the magic of compound interest.

I'm not supposed to be having too much fun at the moment, anyway. And once I am allowed, I could probably do with finding someone to have fun with.

Fun ... such an odd word.
Men think fun = sex, preferably without strings, possibly a bit kinky.
Women think fun = going out for the day, having a steaming mug of hot chocolate with a flake/cream and maybe a sticky bun.

When used in conversation, the word can therefore be misunderstood..... you might already have received 2-3 PMs from random MSE males offering to help you with your search for "fun".

Well, I most likely wouldn't buy something big enough to feed the 5000 anyway.

I can recycle roast meat (whether chicken/ lamb/ beef/ pork) into other dishes for during the week. As I said, I'm a 'Ready, Steady, Cook' cook :)

I may also be receiving a guest over the weekend. I declined an invitation for this weekend (just wanted to hang around at home/ in the garden and people are working much of this weekend anyway), but might have a visitor tomorrow eve/ Sunday.

I didn't know if she had one.

We didn't have a freezer at home until I was mid-teens, then my mum just froze garden produce (badly). I've rarely had a freezer myself over the years.... I will be getting one when I get the house though :)

I do. I don't think I could fit anything else into it though.

Once I have the house, I will have to use the term "house cost", not rent or mortgage.... there's a cost to having the house instead of interest on savings. It's difficult to measure - where would I actually have my money, at what rates (e.g. not maximised in the highest rate account, but put into various accounts and left....). Then there'd have been tax on that interest ..... so that's the "house cost".

As interest rates rise, my "house cost" will therefore increase.

House cost estimate now might look close to £300-350/month.

You need to start eating it all then!

Don't forget at the beginning of September you need to start eating it all down .... so that by mid-December it's virtually empty again.... enabling you to really benefit from any last minute bargains you get over Xmas/early January :)
Not to mention your own leftovers ....
