Good luck NDB! I'm sure that a few NP will have their TVs on this morning and be watching - I will.

Can't remember if you mentioned before NDG, is he doing it for a particular charity?

He is, but it's a small charity, so a bit too identifiable to post on the board. PM-ed you.

Normally there's someone I know running in the London marathon, but this year they have done different ones, perhaps they couldn't get in.

I like watching it, the story just now about the two guys running together was really touching. They are running for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow charity. One was going to die if he didn't get a marrow transplant and there were no matches in his family. A guy he had never met became the donor. Now they are both running together to raise more money for the charity. It's stories like that I like. Plus of course I want to cheer on Mo from the comfort of my sofa.

Watching them I felt guilty about still being in bed, so I am now up. Two of my favourite athletes are already out on the course: David Weir and Richard Whitehead. I just needed the Brownlee brothers to make an appearance now and I've got the full set :)

I can't think of anything less interesting :)

Bunch of small bobbing heads of people you don't know, in a place you don't know - and a bunch of random commentators filling silence with a stream of words as they've no idea what's going on either.

Meanwhile, the camera changes position and scans to another bunch of bobbing heads you don't know, in another place you don't know ... and the commentators' drivel plods on...

That's kinda my take on it too.

Paris-Roubais is on this afternoon, that's proper sport, especially once they get onto the 'pave', the 28 cobbled stretches of road that start after about 100km. Paris-Rubaix is an unusual race in that the big sprint is to get into the lead before they hit the pave sections.

There are so many crashes on the cobblestones that if you're not in the top half dozen at the first pave section then you have no chance of winning, pretty much, because you'll get caught up in crashes.

It's called the Hell of the North for good reason. I would love to ride the route although perhaps over 2 days rather than one.

I really enjoyed the first London Marathon where the winners held hands to cross the line and the judges saw fit to declare it a draw. That was fantastic and a great example of sportsmanship over gamesmanship.

These days I fear that they'd be biting each other to be first across the line so they could be photographed wearing the right watch on the podium.

Watching Saturday Kitchen, Best Bites now. James Martin annoys me now - he's gone "all posh". Yesterday I was annoyed at his Home Comforts "cooking for one" as it was "cooking for one for somebody who either usually lives with others, or who has an abnormally well stocked cupboard by default".

He made some banoffee cheesecake thing and it involved: opening a can of caramelised condensed cream for a big spoonful (no thought of what you'd do with the rest). It involved having three pots of stuff opened: creme fraiche and double cream and cream cheese.

    Recipe: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chocolate_and_salted_32364

I think the cost of the "serves one" must have been £5 - he even used one special Bourbon Vanilla Pod in it!

Anybody can "cook for one", the trick is to cook for one without then having a huge trail of things you've opened that still need to be used up in the next 1-2 days! People who live with others "don't get it" :)

Saturday Kitchen used to be good honest, achievable food, with some members of the audience at the table.... now it's just a stream of his gastro-pub celeb friends cooking posh food to promote their restaurant/book.

I didn't know people had "favourite athletes"!!
I've never heard of any of those people.

Mostly I feel 'excluded' from most of life as I never "get it" like others do - and my views are often not the views of others. Thanks for being in my special Club of "having a different opinion" :)
  • We watched OH start - we can't actually say we saw him specifically, but we watched the run starting at the place where he was and all the people actually crossing the line, so we definitely saw him among them!

It's a lovely day, and I have my fingers crossed for him.

I do have a favourite athlete today, PN - OH!

One of the things I really super extra miss about England is the ability to have a different opinion.

Australians are conformists of the worst kind. If we opened up concentration camps over here then most Aussies would be dobbing in neighbours that had Sri Lankans in their attics.

I have opinions, strongly held ones in some cases. Often times they are at odds with what the majority of people think (e.g. I am a free speech extremist). In England that was tolerated as long as I kept my views to myself for the most part; in Australia lots of people distrust me because I have beliefs that are outside the normal spectrum

PS Any gambling Nice People might want a small punt on Boonen for Paris-Roubaix. He's at about 12-1. Amazing odds for a rider of his quality and sprinting .
