Millie's is nearly as expensive as Lily's!

Millies is 14.5kg for £50, I've only found Lilys in 7kg bags for around £40... so that's double the amount for a tenner extra.

    Hi HMC,

I read your post and can really relate. We have a chocolate lab who was always hyperactive and overweight.

On the recommendation of our local dog trainer we have now switched to Natures Menu and the dog has lost 7 pounds without any extra effort from us (no extra walks etc) just because we switched food. She is also much calmer as she isn't eating all the nasty additives and preservatives from the biscuits.

Natures menu is basically human grade meat that is mince down, you then add a carb (brown rice or sweet potato) and vegetables.

We only give rice as its cheaper and use veggies from price drop corner at the local super market when poss and It costs us just under 1 pound a day to feed her.

Also its not as hard work as it sounds I cook the rice in batches and then split the rice and the mince into sandwich bags which are pre-weighed out for each meal and bung them in the freezer. I usually do about 2 weeks at a time so that all I need to do is get the meal out and defrost it. She usually has the same veg as us so no extra prep there either.

Their website and their online chat can help you workout the volumes that you need to give.

Also if you go onto their website and order direct they offer free delivery, are cheaper than pets at home etc and there is a voucher on there at the moment.

    Hope this helps, x

  • This is a great site for comparing dog foods

Millies is excellent - I really wanted to put Maisie onto the Salmon one but unfortunately it does have potato in it

They are bringing out a turkey one and think I will give that a try when it's available

  • This is also good

Either the Fish or Fish & Chicken

I know a few people whose dogs are doing really well on it (sadly potato is the filler so Maisie can't have it)

You can also get 4% cashback through Zoo+ AND they do loads of other great foods at decent prices

  • Also (sorry should've thought of this earlier) - have you thought about maybe doing 50 / 50 kibble & a good quality wet food?

There are many many more excellent quality wets around than kibbles *sigh*

Things like Nature Diet, Nature Menu, Nature Harvest - and even the Butchers Tripe Loaf tins are grain free & can be fed in rotation to keep costs in check

Also, if you have a Pets@Home near, their Wainwrights range of wet foods is great. They do packs of 12 tins or trays for £9.99 http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/wet-dog-food/wainwrights-adult-chicken-and-rice-12-x-395g?fa=%7c%7cprice_GBP%253A%255B0%2b40%255D%7c%7cads_f12501_ntk_cs%253A%2522Wainwright%2527s%2522#

Again, Zoo+ do a load of great quality wets - as above plus things like Rocco Sensible, Rinti etc etc

Does it not upset their tummies to have some wet now and again especially if a different brand to kibble?
I really like the look of Simpsons and reviews seem excellent but which one lol the senior/light is what the collie should have but it has maize and a few other bits in,mths best is the 80/20 one which both dogs could have ,the most expensive obviously, but reviews say to be aware of high fat content from the meat % so not good for collie?? I'm going to ring them on Monday as if collie needs light then spaniel could go on their cheaper lamb and potato etc

    No

Even Maisie (who has one of the most sensitive tummies I've ever known :() is absolutely fine having her kibble (Fish & Rice) mixed with several different brands of high quality wet foods - although I agree lower quality ones (same as with kibble) could cause problems

Things like Natures Menu, Natures Harvest, Nature Diet, Forth Glade, Wainwrights are all over 60% meat and are absolutely fine to mix with kibble

    etc

Re the Simpsons, the higher quality ones are fine but I'd steer clear of anything with Maize in and I'd personally never feed it - even to a dog with no dietry problems - they can't digest it
