AMEX - 2k spend in 3 months....

Options
Hi All,

Im looking for advice on how to spend £2k on an amex in 3 months. I'd though that perhaps i could pay council tax, buy tesco gift vouchers etc if i look to be short of the spending limit.

If anyone has any hints or tips they would be much appreciated!

Kind Regards

Allan

Don't think you'll be able to do council tax with Amex ... think they usually only take normal CCs?

Bought the wife's season ticket, that was just under £4,500 so managed it in one week rather than needing 3 months :D

Just spend everything you can on it, if you are short then you can buy gift vouchers etc

Put your partners spend on it.
Put any business expenses on it.
Put the houshold spending and fuel on it.
If you're out with friends offer the pay the bill on your card.
I believe Amazon take it so if they are a company you use e.g. for birthday or even Xmas presents, then buy yourself an Amazon voucher and put the credit on your account.
Tescos is another good one if you use them.

I struggled a bit initially but managed to find ways.

Don't get the card until you have £2000 to spend

Use ebay to buy vouchers which don't expire for less than their face value

How do you manage to spend that amount: I thought the charge card has an implicit limit of £2000 (well that's the number I was given when I phoned AmEx about the limit)?

  • I just got this card as well and can't see myself spending £2k on it within 3 months to get the 20000 points.

May sound stupid but can you just transfer £2k from the amex card to a savings account / current account or something? Does that qualify towards the £2k?
  • And being a charge card - watch out as you have to settle the bill, in full, every month.

If there's a fixed limit I think it's only for the first couple of months. I know I've had months with more than £2000 spend without problem and I've had my card less than a year.

Some people are assigned a credit limit instead of the no preset spending limit but I've only ever seen this on US Amex charge cards.

I've spent a lot of money on my Amex charge cards, definitely no £2000 limit as standard.

There is no limit per say, they effectively judge each transaction in its own right and I am surprised they told you any different over the phone.

The standard operators cannot see from their system what "limit" you have and the only thing they do if you want to ask about a large transaction is effectively put a dummy transaction through for that amount.

When I got my chargecard the £4.5k went through fine. I phoned them the next month about a £7k transaction (after already clearing the card) and was told it would be declined. 2 months after that I put through an £8k transaction and it went through fine.

The only time I ever had a problem is when a travel agent made a mistake and put through 4 authorisation requests for what was already a large transaction. I got a call from their credit team asking me to reduce the balance, they then spotted they were authorisations and only one request for funds so just said to please not put through any transaction over £500 until the authorisation had dropped off as they'd likely be declined. Didnt have any problems with normal sub £100 transactions for the few days for the error to be corrected
