Stopover reccomendations, Hertfordshire to Gleneagles, Scotland

We (Husband and I) are going away the week before Easter to Gleneagles for 4 days, I haven't had the time to think about it until now but although its last min we want to stopover on the way up and back to break the driving and I wondered if anyone had any reccomentdations of places to stay/things to do on the way

We love a bit of culture, nice food and wine, relaxing walks, maybe a bit of shopping, who knows we are really flexible.

    Lake District? Borders/Peebles? Edinburgh?

Why not take the train to Edinburgh (4.5 hours from King's Cross) and hire a car from there, and you can reach Gleneagles in an hour or so? 1h14m according to google maps.

Good idea. You can park your car in a Park'n'Ride outside Edinburgh, get the bus in and see the Pandas at the Zoo or go to the museum to see Dolly the Sheep. Lots of nice pubs/restaurants. Visit Arthur's Seat, walk the Royal Mile.

Train could be a good idea but just looked at prices and they are not the cheapest and then added car hire on top. We will also have golf clubs in tow :-( Lake District might be an idea though

Yeh we like Edinburgh, my husband went to uni there too. I think that will be a default option if we don't find anywhere else

If you're coming up the A1, you could consider stopping for an overnight and morning round at Peebles, Dunbar, Eyemouth, or a number of other candidate locations East of Edinburgh (Muirfield/Gullane amongst them). Dalmahoy is just outside the city, not far off your route.

Drive to one of these places, Round of golf next morn, drive to Glenagles in ideal time for check-in mid afternoon...

The other possibility is to go the West coast way (M6/M74) and stop somewhere like Chester or Stirling or Perth.

Before you dismiss it, a quick glance on the map will confirm that Edinburgh's further West than Bristol, so you're not going as out of your way as it might seem.

Stirling and Perth won't break up the driving at all, they're both just round the corner from Gleneagles .....

Perth is 28mins away, Stirling 30mins, and the overall journey is close to 7h ....

Plenty of options around Northumberland. Seahouses, Alnwick, Bamburgh. The downside of this option is the lack of motorway and dual carriageway for long stretches to/from Edinburgh.

... but they're setting off from Hertfordshire, not Bristol ....
