This tariff is really expensive so you might find it cheaper to buy the Hive separately.

Had a look the Hive system today at a home building show.

£199 fitted. No need to be a BG customer.

It is NOT free - it is bundled with the higher price of the only tariff it is included with. Not by coincidence that tariff (for average use) more than £199 per year more expensive than even their own cheapest fix. (Plus another four or five months to August - so add another £30 or £50.) And it is £300 dearer than the cheapest dual fix (and even more if you choose single fuel tariffs.)

Just thinking out loud - what is the early termination charge if you move to another supplier after the HIVE is fitted?

For lower than average consumers it could actually be worthwhile, should they REALLY want Hive? Woudl never go with BG personally but if a punter's consumption was low enough to make the price discrepancy less than £199 then, effectively, they are getting it installed with no upfront fee and 'interest free'.

I thought that - but, nope. 1,200 kWh gas and 1,000 kWh electric still costs £189 more than FU's fix with an extra winter thrown in!!!

(And, of course, not much need for a Hive if you are already minimising your usage.)

Yep, agreed. Just had a butchers and on my consumption in Yorkshire region it's £45/yr more expensive than even the longest fix on the market (fixed until 30/4/2018) which covers an additional three Winters! Cynical marketing from BG...

189 a year extra to not be with first utility sounds like a bargain.

The hive thing is blindingly obviously a higher tarriff so those who want it can have it at no upfront cost.

I suspect if this takes off there will be a plethora of similar products arriving to market. Tado also have a similar system which apparently (unlike Hive atm) allows multiple users to access the control plus offer geo-location and presence detection  . Looks like an easy DIY fix but actually £249 as opposed to BG's £199 including installation.

That actually looks like a much better system than Hive.
