Selling things before moving

Anyone got any tips on where to sell some of our furniture before we move?

We are trying to get rid of some things we don't need as the property we are going to has them. I have managed to get rid of a desk and shoe cabinet through gumtree but no luck with our two beds and a chest of drawers. Need to get them sold by next Tuesday at the latest. I am thinking maybe use ebay but I have never used it to sell before and not sure what I am doing with paypal.

Any tips of other places you have managed to sell things or what to do with stuff before moving would like to make a few quid don't want to just give stuff away!

Ebay can be problematic for big items because of postage etc (although there is a 'buyer collects' option). You also lose money in fees to both ebay and paypal. Have you tried listing in the local paper? Also most areas now have a Facebook page, usually called something like 'free and for sale in XXX'. These can be good. As you are selling have you also considered that a buyer may want some of the items? Tell your estate agent what items you are willing to leave behind (and how much you'd like for them).

when I moved out of my last place, I asked the people moving in if they would like to buy any of the furniture I was getting rid of. I took some photos, made a price list, and emailed it to the letting agent to pass on.

You could put them on Freecycle - if it's anything like Freecycle in this area items will be gone same day. Could also try your local second hand furniture shop if you have one, but expect to get very little or nothing. Is it more important to get some money for them than take them with you if you no longer want them?
  • I've never had any problems with getting rid of furniture on eBay, it always seems to sell. Maybe not a bed, but chests of drawers always get bids. And normally the buyer would pay on collection so no paypal fees.

Agree. Beds are a bit more difficult as some people would not buy a second hand bed. On Ebay you can put "cash on collection" on your listing.
  • the best luck we have had in selling on furniture has been Gumtree.

Not tried to sell a bed though.

But Ebay policy means you're also forced to have Paypal as a payment option too. Is there a smiley for this? Maybe :w@nkers:
