ask your hotel to direct you to a phone shop - it's difficult to get a sim card and they will have helped people before. The shop can also give you advice (it should be ok because of the personal connection with the hotel). In INdia for security reasons you have to apply for a sim card - through the shop - and it requires a passport photo. They then fax/email it to the authorities. I was there in Jan. and it took 24 hrs. but I was warned by others that it can take longer. India sims are incredibly cheap

Some info at the following link:

It would appear you can buy at the airport on arrival, just have the photocopies done before leaving the UK and make a note of the Indian address where you are staying (even if it is a hotel).

As I have a holiday home in goa India. I go there very offend and ones I’m there I use Vodafone sim card. I did buy a sim car from the airport which cost more but did not work after a week. When I went to the Vodafone store and asked what was wrong I was told my paper work was not submitted. I re submitted in the store and my sim card was activated within 24hrs. Since then I just buy the sim card in the Vodafone store. Vodafone network is cheaper in India and good 3G.
