I would charge you 2 hours of labour for the basic engine service, 2 hours of labour for the brakes, 1 hour of labour for the 'corkage charge' cause you brought your own wine (like a restaurant might), and I wouldn't do the 15 checks, but I'd get the MOT place to do an MOT and pay them a trade price of £25, but charge you 2 hours of labour for the 'checks'. Then I'd give you a list of advisories to scare the !!!! off you.
The whole job you detail would actually be passed to my apprentice and I'd expect it done in 2 hours, and he'd get paid £12.50 but I'd charge you £150.
Which is why I do all basic servicing myself and don't trust anyone in the garage trade at all, (apart from Paul, of Paul's tyres, who is a star), despite the fact that most of them are not crocks and are quite reasonable and honest, and would/should charge you £70 for the job.0 -
I'd expect a basic service (oil change, filter change, quick look around) to be around £100-£150. Obviously considerably more if you went to a dealership.
Spark plugs and brake pads can depend entirely on the car in question and if you wish to go for performance parts or not. I'd expect to be charged 2 hours labour for all 4 wheels and the plugs though.0 -
Whats a full service anyway? A nonsense term. The service schedule will say what needs doing at what milage.0

If by no parts you mean you supplied everything I am firmly of the view that is a way to royally upset people that you need on side.
Not always, I price all my services 'labour only' and encourage people to buy their own parts. This keeps me out of the VATman's reach and keeps my prices competitive. It's also nice and transparent and means the customer can see that I'm not making a fortune out of parts.0 -
How long is a piece of string?
Danny G you seem to be asking a question that has no real answer and then you're imposing conditions on it for us to work by too.
Many mechanics would simply not quote you or would quote excessivly high just to get rid of customers like this who are going the extra mile to be extra fussy.
What you should be asking is "How much for X,Y,Z to be done to my car if I supply the parts?"
Thats a much easier to understand question and most mechanics will willingly quote you.0 -
I had front pads and wear sensor fitted to the Jag for just under £50.
Had the rear pads and wear sensor replaced last week for £50 exactly.
In both cases the wear sensor was £20 and a few pence. Pads were Pagid £24 rears and fronts were around £40 but can't remember exactly.
Fuel filter, air filter, oil and oil filter would take an hour. Dependant on access another 30 mins tops for the plugs.
So labour could be anywhere from £50 to £150 for the service.
£50 tops for the pads labour.
But the only way to save money on car maintenance is to do it yourself.
I don't do much more than basics now
Did the front and rear pads on my Pathfinder and all the filters and oil changes.
You can save significant amounts if you get a good independant to do your brakes and buy decent aftermarket OE quality parts from Euro or GSF.
Front and rear pads and wear sensors at Jaguar would have been close to £600.
So i have saved nearly £400 and used quality German made parts.0 -
Depends where in Leicestershire...
I have my local garage do a service (they only change things if needed - apart from fluids, which are a complete change) and that's about £60.
Then again, they have given my car a power steering leak now
Expect all of that to be £500.
Any more and you are being ripped off. Any less and it's a pleasant surprise
