I've not tried catsan clumping tbh. How much are you putting in? If you are just putting a little in then it won't clump although it could just be a bad litter :/
Generally it should be around 4to6 inches deep ( rough guess!)
I use oko plus from zooplus and it's probably 10 litres per tray but as I rarely need to change it I'm not sure
:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly :D
  • I tend to put about an inch or two in, just so as it covers the bottom of the tray. I always think if I put more in I will use up the whole bag at once.
  • It needs to be really deep to work properly

The litter I use comes in a pack of 2 x 14kg bags (cheaper than buying them separately)

I put one full bag in the tray and then use the 2nd as top ups

Only need to do a full tray change every 3 months because it's so deep nothing gets through to the bottom of the tray so very easy & hygenic to remove the pebbles that form:T

We have a covered tray in the garden, we use any variety of clay based litter. We scoop several times a day and empty and clean it every three days.

A really deep litter tray (catit jumbo), Tesco clumping cat litter (a bag and a half in at once so that it's really deep) and the largest liners that I could find on amazon made life really easy. Only had to scoop and top up, and fully empty it every couple of weeks. That withstood 3 cats with health issues that meant they hit the litter box quite hard.

I second the double-bin bag method. It really works.
  • Can I also ask, do you find the covered trays better than the other kind?

Also my cats, as well trained and good as they are, will sometimes poop outside the tray if it has got too full before I get home from work, I have heard that cats will not use a full tray, is this true?

Again - if you are using clumping litter you need to fill in very deep so clumps do not stick to the bottom of the tray.

Re 2 cats = 2 trays, yeah.... Lots of people say that but I have 4 cats and they happily share 2 trays, I had 6 cats and they were happily sharing 2 trays as well so...

I use Golden Grey Master from zooplus:

    http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/golden_grey/litter_golden_grey/29960

It is 19.99 for 2 bags and those 2 bags last my 4 boys (who only ever pee/poo indoors) for a whole month so for your 2 cats 2 bags would last 2 months minimum.

It basically work out at around £5.00 per month per cat so it is very economical.

Clumps really well (provided you fill it in deep enough) so no mess either and no need to use the liners.

None of my cats ever wanted to use covered tray - I have 2 really massive very big and deep trays like that:

    again from zooplus:

With my 4 cats - I empty one whole bag of the litter equally between the 2 trays (half a bag in each), scoop every day (several times per day) and the remaining litter is fresh. I only ever do complete change every 2 weeks as after 2 weeks the litter is too low in the trays so needs changing. So every 2 weeks i throw out whatever litter remains in the trays, wash the trays, fill in with half a bag of litter again and another 2 weeks to go. No liners. No problems.

I have a friend who fosters cats and she doesn't use purpose built litter try - she uses big plastic boxes (similar size to the kerbside recylcing boxes the council provides) The high sides means less mess, plus you can get the litter deep enough that the clumping works properly. She started doing it as she had a problem can who didn't use the trays - the vet suggested he didn't feel safe, and that a tray big enough that he could back into a corner might help. It did.

Why can't you use the tray liners? If you go to a bigger petshop (or somewhere like Pets at Home) they have different sizes (although I mostly used to use black bin liners if I used a liner.

I agree that the key is using more litter than you think you need - always used to use the crystal kind, and use 2 bags for a a large, lidded tray. Less, and the mess is not buried properly so it does get smelly.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
  • I have 3 house cats and two covered litter trays with flaps removed and both lined.

I use 10kg of Catsan non clumping in each tray, which lasts for a week before it needs changing. I also line each tray with Giant Litter Tray Liners from Pets at Home so dead easy to empty and keeps the trays lovely and clean.
