Cat litter tray

Its me again with another question. I have one of those cat trays with that are covered and have a flap on the front, I find this less messy in the way that litter doesn't get kicked all over the floor but I can't use the cat tray liners with it and the tray itself is more difficult to keep clean. I used to have an uncovered tray when I had my other puss and used tray liners and cleaning it was a doddle but she kicked litter all over the floor, the covered tray does seem more hygenic. I use the litter crystals but they only come in small bags so I seem to get through a lot with two cats. When I use the other types of litter it all get soggy and clings to the bottom of the tray and almost impossible to clean.

What kind of litter and tray do you find best? I do use one tray for two cats.

for years weve used the value cat litter but found it to be a totally false economy and buy the catsan one, they do a large 20 kg bag of something similar at pets at home which lasts for ages, thats for two cats

I use oko plus in my covered tray and find it best to have it really deep which minimises wee even touching the tray so much easier to keep clean. I got mine from zoo plus website. IMO the cheap stuff is a false economy

If the litter is sticking to the bottom of the tray then you're not using enough, clumping litter should form little balls that you just scoop out without fuss.
I used to use non clumping but found I was getting through a bag or usually two a week, since I changed to clumping its one a month or thereabouts as I only need to top up, it's more expensive per bag but lasts a lot longer and doesn't smell  tracks a lot though unfortunately, but it does flush which is essential in a 2nd floor flat and outside bins a trek away!

I have one cat and also use a covered litter tray. I line it with bin bags (two folded up so double thickness), then put a thick layer of clumping cat litter (a full bag - ten litres) in it. I use a slotted scoop to remove the clumps a couple of times a day, then change the whole thing once a week. Cleaning it is easy peasy as there is no layer of dampness to tackle and if my cat does bury anything very deeply the bin bags stop it clinging to the bottom.

Hi, I use the Wilkinsons Clumping cat litter and I think its good value at £2.99 for a 10 litre bag. When the cat uses it you cannot smell any wee smell at all. I do take out the clumps all the time though as I cant stand dirty litter trays. I flush number 2s down the loo and wrap the other clumps in newspaper and throw in the bin.
I also put his trays on newspapers as he somtimes misses the tray a bit.
I also use a garden trowel to take out the clumps, not a lttle scoop, and I disinfect both trays once a week or so. I spray every day with disinfectant the area where the trays go for good measure.

I use Tesco clumping cat litter and am happy with it (as happy as you can be with something with wee in!) I've also used Wilko and Aldi clumping and they were ok but didn't clump as well, imo. I'd use them both again though if I had to. When our cat arrived I got a metre of plastic fabric from dunelm and put a large piece of it under the tray. The litter does leave the tray at times but it doesn't go further than the mat. I have a dustpan and brush next to the tray and have a quick sweep whenever I'm scooping.

I scoop 3-4 times a day (when I see it needs doing) and clean the whole thing out once a week. Never had any smells.

I don't use liners, I did try it but they just seemed to make more work for me somehow.
  • Also one tray for 2 cats isnt enough, my vet said each cat needs 2 trays.
  • If you use a good quality clumping litter - and have it really deep so the liquid can't get to the bottom of the tray - you won't need to use litter tray liners AND you will hardly ever need to do a full tray change

I only do a full change around every 3 months and the litter is absolutely find for that length of time - the clumps are very easy to remove & if you do this a couple of times a day the litter stays fresh & clean - it's so much easier!

Yes, it is quite expensive at the start BUT it costs less than £2 / week over the lifetime of the litter which is excellent value - not to mention the fact that you're not constantly having to change / clean trays etc :)

  • Thanks for your helpful replies. I used to use Catsan for my other puss and it worked with the tray liners. A few weeks ago I got some Catsan clumping litter but found the whole litter went soggy when my cats had had a wee and I needed to change it all rather than fish out the clumps, again it was a muddy mess at the bottom of the tray, maybe I need to start putting more litter in, will this actually make it clump rather than go soggy?

I am now fully changing the tray at least three times a week if not more and the bag of crystals are so small they last for about three litter changes.
