I third the wet rubber gloves approach. Cheap, easy and very effective. I have 4 cats, all different colours and two long-haired - they generate a huge amount of 'debris'. I go over the chairs etc once a week, it takes minutes and is very satisfying (if horrifying!)

Thanks for your helpful replies. I will give these ideas a go. I didn't think it was necessary to brush short haired cats though, I used to have persians and they got brushed but I've never brushed short haired cats.

I was thinking of getting a hand held vac to clear up the hairs but I don't want to spend the money if its not going to work any more than my Dyson.
I wouldn't waste your money if I was you. A handheld will pick the hairs up off hard surfaces like tiles and laminate but won't be a lot of good on soft surfaces I shouldn't think. I know that getting cat hairs off duvet covers is a pita but I always used to use the wet rubber gloves trick myself. Good luck!

If they're indoor cats, yes it is necessary. They don't go out in the wind, run through bushes and roll on the ground to get rid of loose hairs, they're doing all that on your bedding, sofa and curtains!!

And they don't have the same natural moult cycle through winter and summer coats as cats that go outdoors.

  • Thanks I will get a brush and try this, how often do you need to brush the cats? I always thought brushing them would just brush the hairs all over the place anyway, just though you needed to brush long haired cats to get rid of knots. I do need to keep on top of this though as they both sheddng a great rate at the moment.

I've just tried the rubber glove trick and works great on the chair and the curtains, magic trick and cheap, thanks for this. However, its not working on the duvet, is there something I am doing wrong?

yes, you have not bought the magic sponge!:p:p:p

One of the best tools for brushing short haired cats is the Zoom Groom. Furminators are good too but they strip huge amounts of the undercoat out so should be used with caution.
  • I am tempted to get the magic sponge, though the hairs on my duvet are literally all over, short fine hairs. Will the sponge get these up into a ball? It sounds like magic.
  • They will def need brushing to try to remove as much hair as poss and keep their coats nice - it'll stop as much being thrown around the house!

These are absolutely fantastic! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kong-CZG-Cat-Zoom-Groom/dp/B0002AR18M (also great for dogs too)

They really get through the coat without being harsh against their skin

to me, part of owning a cat - or being owned by a cat!:D - is that they shed over everything, even new clothes still on the bag! that they also get fleas which need treating and if they are a hunter - that they may get worms.

i just accept i will have cat hairs on clothes and furniture and the others i treat as they occur.
Cats don't have owners - they have staff!! :D:p

  • I've always brushed our cats daily, whether short haired, as we have now, or our semi longed haired boy. I'd also go with the damp rubber gloves or sellotape around hand for getting it off a duvet, we also hoover the bed regularly too
