From the first show (not seen the second yet), the guy who Cheryl Ferguson stayed with was either lying or being taken for a ride in respect of his repayment plan for gas/electric can only be charged around £4 p/w per utility under legislation. There is also a sinking type find one time only all the utility providers have to contribute towards where the debt is cleared in specific circumstances which I am sure if he's disabled he would qualify for. If he was so proud he didn't want his kids to know, why appear on BBC1 - just doesn't add up to me.
The older woman who Boris Johnson's sister went to needs to get her priorities right. Bin the fags first, as a pp said £7 for a stew is ridiculous. Dyed hair, tvs, lights blazing etc, just no attempt to help herself.
The woman who had the Made in Chelsea guy with her, sorry but don't plead for a foodbanks saying you never have any spare money with dyed hair. If you're living with just a couple pounds in your pocket even the cheapest of cheap dyes is out of your budget. There needs to be a change in the way CSA payments are handled quite clearly and an attachment of earnings, even a meager sum from a benefits payment should be made from her kids fathers.
Finally Aida, the woman Theo Paphitis stayed with. She was the only one of the four I have ANY compassion for (not including kids in that). She was the only one who seemed to be making any attempt to do something with her life and for her child, even though it was hard.
The programme I'm sure had good intentions, but for me it simply galvanised my thoughts about the welfare state and just how detrimental it has been.0 -
Its all the wicked Governments fault, they should pay these people more benefits, courtesy of us taxpayers.0

I was most impressed by the person I least expected to impress me last night - Jamie Laing, the spoiled little rich boy from Made in Chelsea. He was with the single dad who was looking after his two little boys.
He did something positive for this father who was cutting out his own food in order that his two children ate well. He found a free food kitchen who would take him on as a part-time chef in exchange for a free lunch.0 -
i think these types of shows are hilarious esp with people like theo paphitis (sp?) in them. here have a multimillionaire sit with you whilst you find out about going bankrupt
all these types of shows just annoy me rather than make me get upset or anything
does anyone remember that show a couple of years ago where a 'rich' family sponsored a 'poor' family so they sent them money and took them on holiday etc and one of the 'poor' families went and bought a laptop - its that same sort of thing for meThe only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50 -
So does "Going Bankrupt" really mean all you debts are "Cancelled"?0

There are some exceptions but yes. Bankruptcy comes at a price though ~ that family had a car on HP which they would lose and as the programme says, they will struggle to get any kind of credit for many years (including a current account with the bank).
There is a Bankruptcy board on MSE -

After watching the programmes over the last couple of nights i thought all the families featured were brave to allow the filming ~ payday loans etc with sky~high interest are a reality for thousands in this country, and so many use credit when they have a job/steady income, it only takes a couple of financial blips, or a job loss and you can be on the slope into what some of these families are experiencing.
i,m sure a dose of OS moneysaving would help almost all of the families featured ~ so where does the general public get educated in that way, and especially those who need it most?0 -
Am I the only one who wondered why some of them had pets when they could barely afford to feed themselves? Interesting priorities.
Are people supposed to give their pets away if they lose a job?
Having rescued pets myself, I have more respect for someone who is skint and tries to keep a hold of their pets than someone who dumps their animal in a shelter, where it might be at risk of being PTS. When my last full time job ended, absolutely no way was I going to rehome my pets.
Its not that expensive to feed pets if you shop around, most of the low cost shops such as B and M, home bargains and wilkinsons do cheap cat and dog food as do aldi.0 -
One of the things I got from this programme is to get rid of debt and never take out credit. If something happens ie sickness, jobloss then you are up sh*t creek with repayments and you will likely end up like these people. They are not extreme cases.....it's happening everywhere, in every town.
Maybe Martin Lewis should do a similar show where MS Experts from this site go and visit some of these people and show them how/where to shop, budget and advice re DMPs. There are so many things I had never heard of until I came on here which then led me to blogs and other financial gurus.Dave Ramsey Fan[/COLOR]0 -

i was shocked at how much that jamie did and how hard it hit him , i hope he spends more time heling (not giving his money away )i think he could be a great help/suport to people
i found it hard to watch when the kids knew there parents were skipping meals for them , i could never have imagined know about that at there ages thats one hell of a burden
also that lady on the first program with theo her daughter leaving food for her mum:( but so kind i really felt for them:(
i also cant believe that people/the celbs didnt realize people are going hungry in the uk? surely people know this ?
i have donated food blankets wash stuff etc to homeless charity's and foodbanks for years , each week a few extra bits go in my basket and at the end of the month i fill a big box to take down lot of people do this and it helps
im not saying for people who cant afford this to do it but
if the people who could got a pack of something or tin of what ever and saved it in a box for a month (dates provided;)) and donated more people can be feed etc
i always remember my great gran saying , help those who need help when you can as you never know when your luck might be down;)0 -

Really? Any compassion?! Well aren't you just a little ray of sunshine. It just amazes me how people can begrudge others everything they themselves have. I just can't abide this cruel, inhuman attitude so many people have. I don't know how you can have the front to declare that you have no compassion for fellow human beings.
It seems to me the real villains here are the payday and doorstep lenders, they should be brought to account and shut down. We are subsidizing their profits. We need a living wage not tax credits, which further subsidize big companies and allow them to keep their workers on low wages and zero hour contracts.Started Comping 25th September 2013.
