We've done this twice now and it's been worth every penny. It saves a lot of time and stress, especially with two young kids and both of us working near enough full time! It wasn't as expensive as you'd think either once you factor in packing materials. When we moved last year, We used a local company and it was around £800 for a small three bed with garden and garage, in the south east but we only moved 1.5 miles. Like others, we packed valuables ourselves into a suitcase and left them to the rest. They came a couple of days before the move to pack everything up, they leave you whatever you ask them to get by. They didn't empty any of the drawers or storage units that we were taking with us, just wrapped them up in heavy duty film for transport so they were ready to go on the other end. They provided all packing material including wardrobe boxes to hang clothes. They reassemble any furniture they disassembled but we did most of the unpacking ourselves. Wouldn't do it any other way now to be honest.
  • ah ok I do like the sounds of it been done over 2 days and the price sounds good as well.
think its time to get on shiply.com and get some quotes...

Like most things it depends on the company. We used a local company to pack and move 4 yrs ago, and it was great. Boxes, packing material, sofa & mattress covers, clothes holders etc all provided by them. £900 for a 4-bedroom house with no garage or loft in south-east - packed by 2 guys in 1 day, then moved the next. Unpacked kitchen stuff as well on moving day, and reassembled all furniture.

Downside was that they were so quick in packing the lorry on the 1st day that we hadn't quite got our 'moving bag' together, and had to unpack a couple of boxes.

Main reason at the time was that completion was less than 1 week after delayed exchange, and I had critical meetings up to moving day - my wife has chronic back/neck pain so couldn't do all the packing herself. However, would certainly do it again.

I've paid for it for the last few moves and agree with above - WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Don't really get these people who wrap the delicates, etc themselves. I am not going to think I can do a better job than removal men who do it for a living. They used TONNES of paper for each item, and reels of bubble wrap. Even for something like a little teapot lid, it was wrapped up with about three sheets of heavy duty paper. And they pack the boxes far better than I ever would.

I've packed for myself several times. NEVER AGAIN. It is the worst job in the world and takes weeks (but then I do have a lot of stuff!).
