Post 6 is spot on. Report it as a line fault, not a broadband fault.

I'd still report it as a Broadband fault!

With Voice (Line) faults, BT have a LOT of latitude, as long as you can make and receive a call they can certify the line as good.

With Broadband they have tighter limits on what they can pass as "good"

    Go here :
    http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

Follow the instructions for the first test (it should pass) then press "Further Diagnostics"

Enter in the number for the line and run the test!

This test will tell you the expected speeds and what you are getting, If their is any major difference it will tell you.

Then get on to BT Openworld to take a look at it.

I had a problem with my FTTC install!
I was supposed to get +60Mbps but only got 16Mbps-24Mbps

It took a number of engineer visits then the last one spent a full day working out the problem, turned out to be a faulty cable junction outside my house and the cable from the pole to the cabinet (which also had a bad patch panel!) was also damaged! he replaced the full wiring between my master socket and the cabinet! I've now got perfect connection (and my neighbours are getting better connections as well as a result!)

You can contact OpenReach directly, But you have to go via BT's Community forums first.

    ADSL: https://community.bt.com/t5/ADSL-Copper-Broadband-Speed/bd-p/BBinHome

    Fibre: https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/bd-p/BTInfinity

Place a post here with the details from the speed test I gave the link for and ask for help let them know you have noise on the line (just copy paste your first post with a copy of the results).

It might take a day or so but eventually an Admin will ask you to go to a "Contact us" page, that will go direct to Openreach support. You should get help quite quickly from them on!

  • Thanks everyone for your replies. S0litaire, the problem does not effect my speed, so is the speed test still relevant?

In my latest conversation with BT today, they said they are sending my a replacement home hub. This is despite the fact I can still get line noise with just 1 phone plugged into the the test socket and with the home hub not connected or even powered up, so I don't see how it can be the home hub.

The test will let you know what BT expects your line to get compared to what you are actually getting.

If the fault is causing the broadband to disconnect, over time BT will automatically keep slowing down your connection till it's finds a stable speed.

I've decided I will probably move to TalkTalk, even though I have 6 months left on my line rental with BT.

TalkTalk will fit me a new line for free, and their unlimited broadband + line rental is still cheaper than what I would be paying BT for 40Gb broadband alone!

As I am moving my broadband to a new line, BT said they will charge me a £30 disconnection fee. I can't say I'm surprised, it seems BT will rob you any way they can. I can't wait to be shot of them.

Moving from BT to TalkTalk might effect a transfer from the frying pan into the fire. I do hope you are not badly affected...

You might want to google for reviews on TalkTalk's tech support service before doing that.

I had a customer ring in this week -He works for TT on the technical side but found their tech support so poor he moved his phone and BB from TT to another of the big suppliers (the one I work for) eighteen months ago and has no intention of moving back.

A new line means nothing as the cabling is the same (TT will not fit you a new master socket they will use the existing BT master socket) so odds are moving supplier is unlikely to resolve the issue.

I work in phone & BB support and in all honesty you'd have had an Open Reach engineer booked by now as the phone is still crackling in the test socket with two entirely different phones (and nothing else connected like filters etc) if I was troubleshooting this one from the symptoms you've given.

A new line? You won't be getting a new line, you'll be getting a new service provider who will use the same copper pair from the exchange as you have now.
There will be a new tie pair in the exchange over to Talk Talks MSAN/DSLAM but thats all.
O and its BT that do all the work.

Thanks for the above replies. Interesting, as The TalkTalk guy I spoke to yesterday definitely said I would be getting a new master socket!

The problem is the crackling line fault is an intermittent fault. So far today there has been no line noise. Yesterday, at times it was worse than ever. Very annoying.

I’ll certainly think about this before doing anything hasty.
