Well the changeover was "all automatic" but he still needed to cancel the old contract. It's my bet that he got the wrong end of the stick. Regardless of blame if he doesn't want a trashed credit rating the first step will be to pay the TalkTalk bill.

No, you are wrong. I had a similar problem with talk talk to BT. It CLEARLY stated on the email i received from talk talk with the MAC that i wouldnt need to do anything and as soon as the MAC was used my contract would end. This was an email from talk talk. When i complained they lied: first saying i never requested a MAC, then that it was never used. My BB was not on talk talk equipment. It was an old BT line so it would not have been possible to do a simple transfer without the MAC being used.

My advise would be dont pay. Check you have all communication with them, record all phone calls. Trust me, talk talk are a bunch of lying b*****s they will trip themselves up with the lies they tell you then you just take it to the ombudsman.

As above. I had a similar problem when I switched from TT. The b*ggers kept on billing me for months after I had switched. I refused to pay. They threatened me with dept collectors. It stopped when I threatened to sue them for charging for services that they were not supplying.

    I even got a £16 refund.

I got a couple of emails from talktalk when i applied to move to plusnet:

We’ve received notification that a customer from another provider is moving to your address and taking over your phone and broadband line.

Please call us on 0870 444 1820* to confirm whether or not this is correct, or if you have any questions. Calls are free from your TalkTalk landline and our agents are available to take your call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If we do not hear from you we will progress with the cancellation of your services and your TalkTalk phone and broadband line will be transferred to the new homeowner.
If your phone and broadband services are being disconnected within the minimum contract period set out in your agreement with TalkTalk, you may be liable for a termination charge calculated as £x.xx for every month left on your contract, as outlined in section 11 of your terms and conditions.

    And this email:
I’m very sorry to hear that you're thinking of leaving Talk Talk before you request your Mac please call us as we would prefer to keep you as a customer.
If you feel that you've exhausted all options available to you and have decided to leave Talk Talk, please contact us: 0870 444 1820.
Your broadband and land line service is provided on Talk Talk’s unbundled network and were unable to generate a MAC code to transfer your broadband service to another provider.
•In order to transfer your service, you should contact your preferred provider and let them know that you are currently on an LLU network and that the MAC process does not apply.
•Your new provider should be able to advise you how best to transfer to them with minimal interruption to your service.
•Alternatively, I can disconnect your Talk Talk services, however:
This will leave you without a telephone line.
You will lose your telephone number.
You may need to pay to reactivate your line, which could cost up to £130.
I hope I’ve given you all the information you need.

    Presumeable he got similar emails?

He would have had some emails for sure. When i was with TT i wasn't on LLU (although the exchange was TT LLU) because TT bought out my old provider. TT sales phoned me endlessly to try to get me to go LLU (and committing to a minimum term) but the service i was getting from them was shockingly bad so i left. As i wasnt LLU i had to get a MAC. It still didnt stop TT charging me for months after i moved though.

TT were fined hugely in 2011 for doing this and it looks like they havent changed one bit
  • I'm not sure if this is the place to post but I'm very interested in the TalkTalk debt "recovery" spurious or otherwise. I have had three phone calls in the last three days purporting to be from Talk Talk re an account which I don't have. (The phone number is 02079981437 if you have caller id). I did have a Freedom 2 Surf account over 4 years ago which was on direct debit and I got a MAC number and left F2S because the service was became so bad. The above thread include reference to TT being fined for this kind of harassment some years ago. It seems they are at it again. Has anyone else recently been targeted?

That was exactly the same as me. TT bought F2S. I requested my MAC and transferred to BT. I left the DD run and checked it after a few months. TT were still taking money. I phoned them and they said i was still with them and that i never even requested a MAC. Fortunately i had all the emails and recorded phone calls. TT support said they wouldnt cancel the account unless BT wrote to them. Knowing i was 100% in the right i told them to **** off and that i would cancel the DD. I said i would love to see them in court since they wouldnt stand a chance. Not heard anything since but still expect some comeback.

TT have been fined twice for doing this and they are still at it.
