E.E Mobile says I can keep my number?

Called in my local E.E shop to see about terminating my contract which is now out of contract. I was told to the procedure for cancelling is to phone EE on 150 but you will loose your number when the contract is cancelled. I thought you could retain your number through releasing the pac number? but the salesman was very adamant that it could not be done.

Is this correct?

If you ask for a PAC, they cannot refuse to give you one. People transfer numbers from one network to another every day!

As I understand it cancelling is different from porting.

By asking to cancel you will just terminate you account with EE and lose your number, you would need to initiate a number port rather than a cancellation.

As above (post 2). They must give you a PAC.
Just moved my mobile away from them by calling 150. They asked why I was leaving and when I said because this other network has a better signal near me and is cheaper, he said no problem. Received my PAC by text within an hour.
They lie to you and basically tell you anything to get a sale in my experience - leave them and never contemplate going back!:)

Is there a time limit to use the assigned PAC number? Because I first have to give 30 days notice. Perhaps I should make a request for the PAC number before closing down the contract?

Usually they must be used within 30 days. There are stories of people giving 30 days cancellation notice, then asking for a PAC, which results in the cancellation notice being withdrawn and things getting confusing, resulting in an extra month's billing. It all sounds very complicated. If you search for similar topics involving EE/T-Mobile/Orange on here you'll find out more. The simplest advice I've seen is to cancel your contract and ask EE to change your number to PAYG. Then, as soon as you're on PAYG, request a PAC and transfer away.
I was on PAYG anyway and had no trouble moving my number away.

You can't request a PAC and cancel-it's one or the other.
