on the other hand i dont pay no tax on my earnings only NI so basically its all mine what i earn"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0 -
NMW is more than sufficient to live on outside London and the south.
No it isn't, we have to scrape by every month and dread any unexpected bills. DH had to take the only job that was on offer when he was made redundant and now earns less than half of what he used to.
It is not because he is unskilled, it is because the jobs are not thereBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Then they can either find a second job or improve their skills set. There is plenty of low paid work available for those that are willing. I don't know anyone that has been out of work for more than a month in recent years.
It is a bad idea because it gives a false baseline. Those at the bottom of the pile have no incentive to improve themselves, and those a few levels higher are demotivated because those less capable are getting the same pay as them. People should earn what they are worth, and not everyone is worth NMW.
What part of there are not enough jobs to go around can you not grasp and don't give me tory bull about inmmigrants finding work because most are exploited by employers who pay them less than minimum wage, use gangmasters and charge extortionate rents.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Are you both doing a decent amount of hours, though? As I mentioned above, if you each do 60 hours per week, you are getting £40k per year. Yes, 60 hours a week is hard, but it's what I've been doing for twenty years, as have most people around me.0 -

That is £20,000 before any deductions. £15,000 in reality for a 60 hour week.0 -
No, that's £16,417 after deductions. Each.
And yes, we discuss gross wages. That's pretty normal when discussing what people earn. It's still a joint salary of £40,000.
With both partners working 60 hour weeks. Most couples have children that need to be brought up. Should they pay for a nanny out of their massive wages?0 -

Those a 'few levels higher' can also take your advice and find a second job or improve their skill set, or does that only work for those on low-pay?0 -

Yes having only one person working, on the minimum wage, when they've chosen to have children, and need one person to stay home and look after them, is going to mean that you are poor.
This is why most of us make sure that we can earn more than the minimum wage, and delay having children until we can afford them.
There's a lesson in there, if you choose to see it, or a class based moan to be vented, if you don't.0
