    Is it?

Are you assuming that most employers give unlimited hours. Not the reality for most.

Then they can either find a second job or improve their skills set. There is plenty of low paid work available for those that are willing. I don't know anyone that has been out of work for more than a month in recent years.

Therefore, by your argument -- NMW was not a bad idea.

It is a bad idea because it gives a false baseline. Those at the bottom of the pile have no incentive to improve themselves, and those a few levels higher are demotivated because those less capable are getting the same pay as them. People should earn what they are worth, and not everyone is worth NMW.

Of course, there is an incentive to improve themselves - they will get a higher hourly wage if they do.

As I said earlier, the Tax credit system is the main problem. If they weren;t in existence, then maybe not everyone (regardless of the type of work they do) would get the same pay because the governmnet wouldn;t be articifically boosting it up to a certain level, when in reality it should be the employer's job to pay different rates dependant upon the job the employee does (above a certain minimum level).

It shouldn;t be the government's job to boost the level of pay of people in work. Enforce certain rules yes, but not then give emplotyees extra money because employers are not prepared to.
And I say that as someone whose views lean towards the left.

Heard of the expression you pay peanuts, you get monkeys?

Well I suggest you come to this seaside town in south wales and see what the job situation is like rather than spouting this tory clap trap.

You read like something out of the victorian work house age.

If these people are not worth nmw £6.31

how much do you suggest they get? How low should it be allowed to go?

People criticised Bob Crow for his £145k per year yet he raised terms and conditions for the union members. So on worth grounds he was worth it.

Therein lies the problem: not everyone wants to improve themselves (or can). As I was saying, the NMW affords protection for the less able. Remember if every cleaner wanted to move up to a career, there has to be another cleaner to take their place. We all know where they will come from.

Once again-many of us don't get 40 hours.

Seasonal work-zero hour contracts-as and when required, the list goes on.

While I obviously agree that many hourly paid staff can't get as many hours as they like, I can't understand what that has to do with someone's ability to live on the minimum wage.

If you work full-time (35-40 hours) on minimum wage, you should be able to live on that. How high the minimum wage should be doesn't have much to do with whether you can find a full time job or not...

I just employed a recent graduate who's working remotely from China and earning 2x NMW. Skills now count for far more than geography.

Also, I grew up in a seaside town and haven't been out of work at any point since the age of 13.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.
