Cancelling Orange Contract Due to Job Abroad

Ok I have a dilemma with my Orange contract...
I am currently paying about £40 per month on an Orange student additions contract.
I have about a year left on my existing contract and have been offered a placement in France which I cannot turn down. I called Orange today to see if there there was a way to cancel my contract or see if there was a way around it.
They are expecting me to either buy out the existing line rental on the contract for some ridiculous fee!! Or alternatively freeze the connection for up to 6 months but this still means 6 months of paying £40 (ie a wasted £240!!)
I got quite irate explaining I have been a valued customer for over 5 years but she could only give me some bull about it being company policy. Quite frankly i am sick of Orange.
Can anybody please please please enlighten me as to a way around this??

It's a contract, so I doubt there is an easy way out of it.....
I would think it may be a case of damage limitation, so try and reduce it to the cheapest plan possible.0 -
Yeah thats what I was thinking - probably go down to the £25 per month option.
Its just frustrating because it is unforseen consequences. Grr.....0 -
I emailed them, with a very appealing polite email. I heard nothing for ages. After about 5 weeks a lady called me up, she offered to reduce my package to the £14.99 per month until the contract ran out.
I accepted.:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -
even if they freeze your contract it will still have 12 months left, thats the point of freezing. The cheapest tarrif is waht £20 so either way it's c.£240, or you freeze for 6 months, then pay 6 months of £20 then you can continue the contract for the final 6 months when you return here.
It's a contract, we agree to the T&C's, and when we sign up for 2 years, we stare longingly at our shiny new phone that somehow is free and think "It's too good to be true" and it is.0 -
i got a Orange thing through the post saying all incoming europe calls were free, maybe try get it down to 14.99 like savage ?
Talk Europe its callled and it payg anywaySO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe

I think savage is reffering to an old contract but IIRC £20 is the lowest contracts Orange have on offer for retail currently, unless their Customer Relations can still access tarrifs no longer issued in general0

have you got a copy of the contract to read? When I lived in France, a way out of their mobile or other contracts was if you had to leave the country and could prove that. This may be just french law or it may be EU law??
sorry, just a thought. Not exactly sure how you would check. Plus presume despite their name and website etc looking the same, orange uk is a different company to orange france?0 -
