Cash left in cashpoint

The other day I went to get some cash out from a cashpoint outside Sainsburys, had a lot on my mind & when my card was returned I took it & walked off without taking my cash. When I realised my mistake I went back & spoke to customer services, the guy on the coaunter told me that a policeman had walked past about that time & noticed the cash machine drawing the moeny back in, apparently he called it in to the police station. I've rung my bank (HSBC) & they don't want to know. Where do I stand on this?

If the machine has taken the cash back, then when the machine is balanced at the end of each working day it will realise it is 'up' by that amount. If you report it to Sainsburys, your bank and also the ATM provider then it should be credited back to your account in a day or so.

HSBC have to investigate this for you, call them back.
  • As the above poster said, if the machine has taken it back in then when someone comes to balance, it will be showing an incorrect balance. If you contact the relevant people (as mentioned) it will eventually come back to you

It could take more than a day for the money to be credited into your account though depending on when the Machine balances.

The ATM should have recorded this in the transaction log. Your bank should be able to check this. Don't be fobbed off by them.

Also, check your account to see if the money has been taken out and then credited back to your account.

Even if it's not a HSBC machine? It was a Sainsburys bank machine.

Yes the money was taken from my account straight away & has not been returned as yet (6 days)

Will get on to Sainsburys bank tonight

It's for your bank to initiate the query.

You can't contact Sainsbury's bank, you aren't a customer of theirs (well, you may be, but not for this transaction). You contact HSBC, they deal with Sainsbury's.

The fact that the transaction hasn't reversed by now means that it will need some manual intervention, so it may take a few more days to resolve.

It's a shame you got a numpty at HSBC the first time you rang, had they known that it is their responsibility it would probably have been done and dusted by now,
  • I had a scenario few years back when a Sainsburys ATM didn't dispense my cash but was still debited from my account. When i spoke to my bank, they advised it should correct itself overnight but it didn't, so i had to go into my local branch & fill out an ATM query form. From then it took 2 weeks before the cash was credited back to my account.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

While the general principles of your post are right most ATM balancing processes tend to be weekly or fortnightly.

That said, HSBC should refund the account while they investigate.

Most ATMs are filled (and indeed emptied) weekly. Only bank branch ATMs tend to be balanced daily (as they fill them up in branch). ATMs have a "dump cassette" where failed withdrawals and torn notes are disposed of. This cassette is not "countable" by the machine, it is simply counted up when returned to the cash centre. An ATM cannot return notes to the main cash cassettes.

I have to say I find Sainsbury's account of what happened extremely hard to believe. A police officer was passing and noticed an ATM doing something it is supposed to do and called it into the station?! Why would he do this? I would be highly suspicious of this for a start. Police have enough to do without bothering themselves with an ATM working perfectly well. He may well have stood by the machine whilst the money was taken back in so nobody else took it. But we're talking a matter of 20 seconds here, did YOU notice a police officer in the vicinity? Or perhaps a Sainsburys employee behind you in the queue? Sainsburys will probably have a CCTV camera above the ATM that they could review.
Could HAVE. Should HAVE. Would HAVE. Not OF.
