BT prepaid phone line

I have prepaid my BT phone line and understood that the 1571 and 1471 would continue o be free, but I have been billed for them on my latest bill (not the only problem, I have BT Infinity, but more later). When queried, I was told that the terms and conditions allowed BT to do this. That is not what I had read on the MSE email. WHo is correct? On phoning BT I was also told that I could have the 1471 free with a new line contract. I received an email thanking me for the new order- that I had not made! When I spoke to another BT official I was then told that the 1471 was free from the time I had phoned to the end of the present contract- which contradicted the earlier message. I advised BT to cancel the option - so I could check on this. Any ideas?
(Extra-When is a contract not a contract- try BT Infinity- costs jump!)

1471 is always free UNLESS you use it to call back the last caller??0

1571 has been chargeable since January at £1.75 per month. This was widely advertised.
Nothing to do with having already taken Line Rental Saver. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Brewerdave- I thought 1471 was free too- but check your bill! It appeared as a charge on mine along with several other items that I DIDN'T have. The latter I am chasing up as I think it is fraudulent.
Be careful when your BT contract ends- no additional notice is given - so the service continues but at the maximum price! This can be quite expensive if you are using their broadband.0 -
See above. It is free. You are only charged if you use the facility to put you through to the number given. Dial it yourself and no charge is made.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Sorry Macman- it appeared on my bill!! That is the point I am making!! £1.75 per month! Along with the rest of the items that I didn't have!!0

As you have already been told, the charge is not for 1471. it is for 1571, which has been chargeable since 4/1. If you don't want it, go into My Account and cancel it.
Why not post the actual billing entry that you are disputing? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Sorry- again- My bill shows £1.75 for the 1571 feature AND another £1.75 for the 1471! That is what I have said. I agree with you that it should be free, but it isn't for me! I have contacted BT but have not got a satisfactory response- at least when I was cut off after 55 minutes then had the phone put down when I tried a different contact number - before anyone spoke,- that's what I think is a very poor customer service.0

BT Answer 1571 is £1.75 per month. BT Privacy with caller display is also £1.75 per month.
I phoned up BT and cancelled these charges within a couple of minutes.
If you are being charged £1.75 for the 1471 then something is going wrong somewhere.
I did not know that you could dial 1471 free as long as you did not use the facility to reply to the caller. I stopped using the service after getting charged for it. Thanks for the info.
o/p you can easily check what you are paying for by going online and logging in to your account. You can cancel anything there or alternatively phone up, as macman has already said.
Even though it has been widely advertised it is an "opt-in" charge for facilities that were previously free. Lots of people will be caught by this. Probably lots will carry on paying for years oblivious to the extra charges.0
