Tips on painting new plaster.

There were just 2 things i was wondering before i get cracking...
We've just bought in some Dulux Trade Supermatt after reading it's ideal for new plaster as it lets it dry out/breathe.
Q1:
When painting, the directions always say a clean, dry surface. No contamination, no dust etc etc. Well, the new plastered walls will still have dust on wont they, even after a wipe down. So what do you do?
If you wet a cloth & run this over the entire walls & ceiling, that's chucking water back into the plaster.
Or is it ok to just slap some paint on there? I've read about a mist coat & 50% paint to 50% water seems to be the popular ratio for this misting.
Q2:
I know this paint supposedly lets the walls breathe & dry out, but do ALL the walls need to be dry before painting - as in that pasty pinky colour?
Or can you still have dark patches, such as where bonding has been used, and paint over these?

Or have we got to leave that section until it goes pasty/pink?

My mate who's a platerer and done some work for me advised to wait about 48 hours AFTER it was all salmon pink colour before painting.1

Those darker pink patches you have are where it still hasn't dried out yet. That still needs to be left longer, give it a few more days. As for worrying about little bits of dust, don't, as you say you can't get every little bit of dust off, just wipe over the walls with a towel or something, then paint. First coat, watered down 50/50 matt emulsion, then a few more coats just emulsion, then you can go to the colour.0

Morning. We have just had our 3 bed semi replastered throughout the main rooms. Our plaster advised to leave as long as possible. His recommendation was 2 weeks, whilst it goes light pink at the front he says certain areas behind the plaster are most likely still moist and need to left longer, if the weather improves and lots of natural light hits it, it will take less time.
On a slightly related question I just purchased a 15L Leyland Emulsion for new plaster super Leytex Matt Magnolia from Selco. It was only on for £21.99 (ex VAT) for 15L which I thought was really good price. Says it will cover 12/14m2 per litre.
Was wondering if anyone has used it? and whether it needs to be watered down slightly first?
Would 15l be sufficient enough for a typical semi? 4 medium sized room and a box room is what I need to cover.0 -
All new plaster should have a mist coat whatever it says on the tinI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
I'd imagine 4-5-6 weeks on it should've fully dried out.
The majority has, however there's a good foot band on one wall that hasn't (bonding was used - yet bonding used in other areas has dried out) and where they've used skim beads - you can see the shaping of it clearly through the plaster. Like it's wet.0 -
We are having a new kitchen fitted. Last week the old one was removed, the electrician did his bit and yesterday the whole thing was replastered.
Because of the Bank Holiday, our fitter is coming back on Tuesday to start the install and we thought it would be a brilliant idea to emulsion while the whole room is empty.
We have the radiator on low and a dehumidifier going. It is a large room 16ftx9ft. There are areas going paler already and we were hoping to be able to slap on a couple of coats of emulsion on Monday. Are we being too optimistic. The weather here is cool and damp.0 -
It should be an even pink as you say, but, there will be areas that don't dry the same. Salts in the wall and excessive pressure when plastering are the culprits.
leave it a few days after the majority has gone dull then paint.
Cheapest of cheap trade emulsion is all you need, don't buy too big a drum, it's bottom coat only and useless as a finish.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
We have no choice with our plaster - it has to come off.
When it finally gets done properly, what do you guys do -
We bought that Dulux Trade Supermatt. When it goes on it leaves a very rough finish. I know you paint on top of it but do you sand it down first with some superfine paper so it's a smooth surface or do you leave it rough as?0 -

Did you put a mist coat on first?Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
